“Don’t come to practice tomorrow,” I say.

He stares back at me for a moment.

“I’ll see you around Pen.”

Pen.

No one calls me Pen.

No one but…

“What did you just call me?” I ask, but he’s already turned and out the door, his long legs eating up the hallway.

I close the door behind me and realize that the only thing that can make me feel better is a movie marathon, a fluffy robe, and a tub of ice cream that I don’t have to share with anyone.

After tomorrow, everything will make more sense. I have to trust my decision.

Slade

Getting on the elevator to head to the stadium, I shake my head at what just happened between us.

There’s a part of her that wants to pick me—I know it. But she doesn’t want to admit it.

I fucked up.

I never should have brought Win back from whatever Siberian hell hole in the universe I sent him to.

I brought him back to help wiggle my way back in and it blew up in my face… again.

You’d think I would have known better, but I had no idea that her feelings for Win were that strong back in college. If I had known that I brought back my own competition, I wouldn’t have done it, but I felt desperate and I made a bad call.

A decision that now means I lose it all.

Tomorrow, when she sees me at the rink, I’ll be lucky to make it out of there without an ice pick to the throat.

I open my phone and do an internet search:

Jenny McPhearson, figure skating coach.

Her number is listed as an instructor, and I click on her call information.

I put the phone up to my ear, hoping not to get her voicemail.

“This is Jenny.”

“Hi, Jenny. You don’t know me but my name is Slade Matthews, and I—”

“Slade Matthews? The same Slade Matthews that played hockey for the University of Washington four years ago.”

“Yeah, that’s me,” I say, surprised she remembers me.

“The same Slade Matthews who cost my most talented student her chance at the Olympics?”

Oh… shit…

“The same guy,” I say, preparing for an ear-lashing of how I ruined Penelope’s life.

If anyone knows the amount of damage I caused firsthand, it’s Jenny.
