“He won’t trade you. Not after he knows what you did for me—what you did for me and him.”

“Don’t tell him… please?” he begs.

“He should know.”

“It’s in the past. He’ll only feel like shit that he brought you to that school and caused you pain.”

Slade’s right.

My father’s guilt for the bet placed on me and for sending Slade to Canada isn’t worth it.

“Alright, I won’t say anything to him about it.”

“Thank you,” he says, releasing his hand against my jaw. “Are you disappointed that Win doesn’t exist? Would you still have picked him over me?”

“Win does exist. That’s just not his real name. And in the end, I don't know if I would have gone through with dating him. He was the safe bet,” I admit.

"And I'm not safe?" he asks, his eyes locking on mine.

"I was worried I might not make the starting lineup and live my mother's life. A daughter set to repeat her mother's mistakes," I say.

"Pen, you're number one. You always have been. Hockey is just the damn bench warmer. How can I prove that so you believe it?"

He's offering to prove it to me.

How could I have almost passed on this man?

"You already did prove it the day you threatened Sean and the entire athletic department not to come near me and then ended up putting your career on hold for me. I'm sorry I didn't see it before."

“Don't apologize. I would do it again if given the chance. But now there’s only one last thing I need to know.”

“What’s that?”

“If Sam does trade me or sends me back to the farm team when he finds out that you and I are together… will you go with me this time?”

I know he’s kidding about my father sending him back to the farm team, but there’s no guarantee that my father won’t trade him. As the GM, it’s part of his job to make trades for the team's betterment. Any player could be traded at a moment's notice.

There’s hope in Slade’s eyes as they search mine, and I know my answer immediately.

“Yes. I’ll follow you wherever you go.”

He grins down at me.

“Can I kiss you now?”

“Yes, and hurry. I’ve been waiting all night.”

He twists his body to press his lips to mine, and before I know it, Slade makes a swift move, and I’m lying under him in the hospital bed as he adds pressure to our kiss, one of his hands slipping under my shirt.

I don't want him to stop but our history suggests that Tessa should be barging in at any moment.

“Someone might walk in,” I mumble against our kiss.

"I'm sure they've seen worse," he grins.

"I love you," I tell him.

I knew it before this but it's time he knows.
