That’s the difference.

WinTheDay067: I understand that the guy can be a dick sometimes. Maybe this would be good for you? Maybe this is what you need to bury the hatchet. It sounds like he’s trying to make it up to you. And on the bright side, he won’t come with any bad habits from old partners or have any competing opinions about how a move should be done.

I know I’m using my influence against her right now and I’ll probably go to hell for this, but I have to take my shot.

SkatrGirlPen: Slade… not opinionated. That’s funny.

WinTheDay067: Ok, but it sounds like he’s willing to do whatever he needs to make up for your missing partner. Isn’t it worth a shot?

She doesn’t answer right away and when I hear the jets fire up for departure, I know I’m about to lose cell reception to get the answer I’ve been waiting for.

SkatrGirlPen: I think I might be.

Relief hits me.

It’s not exactly an answer, but it’s something.

WinTheDay067: I’ve got to go. I’ll talk to you soon.

Then, as I stow all of my gear away for takeoff, a text message comes through my phone.

Unknown Number: Hey, it’s Penelope. I got your number from Tessa.

Slade: Hey, we’re about to take off. What’s up?

I instantly program her into my phone so I have it.

Pen: If you’re still available, I’d like to try skating together. We’ll start with one practice. Let’s see how that goes.

It’s not the vote of confidence I was looking for but it’s a start.

Slade: I’ll be home tomorrow morning. I’ll see you at the stadium.

Pen: Ok. Good luck tonight.

Slade: Thanks.

Chapter Fourteen

Penelope

I skate onto the center ice, my legs almost jittery with anticipation for Slade to walk up the player’s tunnel to join me on the ice.

Last night I stayed up late watching old videos of me and Toby skating while I thought about what Slade said about me competing again.

God, that was a fun part of my life.

I haven’t skated with a partner in over four years, and I’m feeling a little nervous about being rusty.

I texted Slade last night and told him not to worry about coming in to skate this morning since the team was probably going to party all night.

They won their fourth game in Denver, putting them at 4-1. They won the first round of playoffs and now they are on to round two. Their first game will be in three days in Alberta.

He texted back and said that he wasn’t going to drink and would try to sleep on the plane to be fresh for the day.

He’s taking this seriously and I guess so should I.

“I’m here, coach. Tell me what to do,” I hear Slade’s voice echo through the stadium.
