It’s an innate primal response to want to mate with the strongest and most attractive man in your vicinity. To give the future population the best genetics you can pass on to strengthen your species for longevity.

I remind myself.

However, if Slade was the last man on earth and it was between procreating with him or letting the human race die out… I’d come to terms with the fact that humanity had a good run and let that be the end of it.

“Well, six to six thirty is my time, and I don’t like sharing the ice. And you’d better not be in the locker room from six-thirty to seven because I use the showers,” I say, pushing past him.

He moves a little to let me through, and I do my best to slide past him sideways so that we don’t touch. The last thing I need with this man is physical contact.

Just as I make it successfully past him, the warm sensation of his fingers reaches around my right wrist.

Tingles shoot up my arm at his touch, and I want to shake them off immediately and take a hot shower to wash away any reminiscence of him that makes my body react to his touch like that.

“Hey, hold on,” he says quickly.

I dart a look back at him, and he releases me instantly when he sees my eyes narrow at him for touching me.

“What?” I bark.

“I just wanted to say that you look good out there.” His cocky smile disappears, and that sparkle in his eye fades.

There’s something genuine in those eyes now… or at least I think there is, but then again, how can I trust anything when it comes to him?

I can’t.

“Thanks,” I say cautiously.

I'm uncertain about the credibility of his compliment.

I turn back and head down the tunnel.

“Penelope,” he calls out again.

I turn my head to look over my shoulder, already making it halfway down the tunnel.

“It’s good to see you again.”

He slides his hands into his pockets.

I hate how genuinely he says it like he really is happy to see me. The cocky Slade Matthews from college seems to have faded, and now… who is this person, and why am I having this reaction towards him?

I nod quickly and then turn, walking a little faster than before. I need to get out of here as soon as physically possible.

I wish my hormones had an on-and-off switch right about now because Slade Matthews is on the short list of people I wouldn’t mind wiping off the face of the earth.

But really, it’s just a list of one.

I think we should meet up. We’ve been emailing back and forth for four months and I still don’t know who you are. Don’t you want to meet me?
