She has a point.

She and Lake had history, too, but not like I have with Slade.

Lake cost her a vacation with a guy she was settling for anyway. Slade cost me my childhood dream.

It's not exactly like looking in the mirror.

“He was in my apartment fixing my shower when he found a pregnancy test that Isla left behind. He thought it was mine and that I’m pregnant.”

Tessa's jaw drops.

“What did you tell him?” she asks, her eyes widening, gripping her coffee, and leaning in like I’m about to tell the most epic story of all time.

“He stormed into my office with a pregnancy test and told me he’ll buy me any house I want,” I tell her, cutting out all the parts where he made my heart pound and my knees go weak at how he reacted to thinking I was pregnant and pleading to be allowed to take care of us.

I hate to admit it, but a little part of me wanted to be pregnant with how excited he was.

The day that I tell someone I’m pregnant, I hope that they react with that much enthusiasm, begging me to tell them that the baby is theirs and offering to be a supportive partner.

“And then what? You told him that you're not pregnant, so he decided to finish the job on top of your desk?” she asks with a smirk.

“No. He barged in with his pants on fire and didn’t listen to me when I tried to tell him that the pregnancy test wasn’t mine. Then he made all of these promises and begged me to let him take care of us. And then…”

“And then you totally had sex with him in your father’s executive office reception area because he’s crazy about you?” she asks.

But it’s not a question; she is trying to lead the witness.

“Oh my God,” I say, leaning my elbows against the table, smashing my face in my hands. “I can’t believe I did that.”

The more time we spend together, and he shows me all these sides of him that I didn’t know existed, the harder it is to write him off completely.

What the hell am I going to do if I’m falling for both Win and Slade simultaneously?

Or have I already fallen for both?

“What’s really going on between you two? There has to be something I’m missing. You don’t just jump a player on the team that you work for and have hated for years, for no reason.”

I see one of the usual cooks walk out from behind the counter with our order.

They’re so busy today, and with Mary training a new person because Chloe didn’t end up working out, Mary’s a little short-handed up front today.

“Thanks,” we tell him.

He lays down both plates of food and then takes the plaster number from our table.

“Nothing is going on between us… he’s just—”

“Gorgeous?” Tessa interjects.

“No.”

But that’s a lie because he is.

“Good in bed?” she asks.

“No,” I say.

Another lie.
