Page 29 of His Damaged Purpose

He parked the car and the three of us got out. Pol came to my side and put his arm around me. I didn’t need the help walking, but I appreciated it.

“Nathan is at my house. It’s that one there.” He pointed to a small but well-kept cabin. “It’s not much, but it’s ours.”

Ours. What a beautiful word.

“Ours? I can stay with you, right? Morgan said?” Just because things had been figured out between Steelwick didn’t mean I was welcome. Being an alpha, I wasn’t automatically welcome. I hadn’t been sure where I was going fit in to the pack. Pol? Yes, but not the pride structure as a whole, and I didn’t want to make assumptions.

He grinned. “No one could stop me from having you stay in my home.”

I kissed his temple, drew in his scent, and rubbed my cheek over the top of his head, marking him with mine. I stopped short of shifting to my lion form so that I could rub him all over. There would be time for that later.

And then I remembered that I couldn’t shift. That was a good sign, the forgetting. It meant I was feeling more like myself, like my body wasn’t a disaster of brokenness.

“Let’s check in on Nathan and then get you into a bed.”

“I’m fine,” I said. “And yes, please on the visit.”

He shot me a stern look. “You need a shower and then bed right after your visit.”

“Yes, mate,” I said with a wink.

The house was quiet when we walked in, but there were two voices that drifted down a short hallway. Pol pulled me along. We came into a small bedroom. My breath was stolen from my lungs at the sight of Nathan’s battered body lying in a bed. If this was him doing better, I shuddered at what he must’ve looked like when he came in.

His face broke into a smile when he saw us.

“Silas!” Nathan said. “And your mate.”

Pol hesitated, but I pulled him forward.

“I’m glad you’re awake,” I said. “I’m so sorry.”

Nathan held up a hand. “You saved me.”

I shook my head. “I couldn’t stop him from hurting you.”

“You stood up for me. That is what saved me. And based on the phone calls I’ve made so far, I’m not the first omega that this has happened to. I wish those others had had someone like you to stand up for them.”

There was a lot for me to catch up on.

“I didn’t stop anything,” I said.

“But you did.” His voice cracked, and his meaning slammed into me. Thank gods for small favors.

“Steelwick will have the evidence they need now,” Morgan said.

Nathan let out a yawn, and his head slipped back on his pillow. He was exhausted and would need a ton of sleep in the days to come. But there were days to come thanks to Asilo.

“You should rest,” Morgan said.

“I’ve only been up for thirty minutes.” That was Nathan. He never did like to be told what to do.

Morgan chuckled. “A lot has happened, and you have a lot of healing to do.”

Pol’s brow furrowed. “Thirty minutes? You called us hours ago.”

Morgan’s cheeks turned red. “Well, we’ll let that be our little secret.”

Tears came to my eyes. My mate’s pride believed me, protected me, risked everything for me.
