Page 32 of His Damaged Purpose

I laughed. “I can do that.”

He rolled over, planting his lips to mine for a deep passionate kiss. Hands began to wander, clothes began to fall, and then suddenly I broke away and ran into the bathroom, reaching it just in time.

“Hey.” He handed me a wet washcloth as I kneeled before the porcelain throne. “I thought you could use this.”

“I’m so sorry. You shouldn’t see me like this.”

“Like what?” Silas asked.

“All gross and… gross.” I flushed the toilet and stood up. “And for the record, this had nothing to do with you and what we were doing. I was… too much cake.”

He stepped out of my way as I went to the sink to brush my teeth.

“You’re wrong, my love.” He took the washcloth from me. “This has everything to do with me.” He placed his hand on my middle. “And while I hate that you were sick, I love that this was all my fault.”

“I do too, alpha mine. I do too.”

Chapter 17

Silas

I was never an alpha that fit in with the other alphas, which was why my closest friend up until meeting my mate had been another omega. I hadn’t really minded. I had more in common with them. At least the ones in my pack. Alphas were expected to be strong, protective, aggressive, and assertive in all things. That wasn’t me. I was a little math nerd who was happy with the way they were.

I won’t lie. As time passed by and I was still alone, some insecurities set in over it. But that was behind me now. I not only had an omega who loved me for exactly who I was, but a pride that looked at me as an individual person, my designation was irrelevant.

Of course, if I had known alphas like Gideon, Cooper, Dean, and Shaw, perhaps things would have been different. They looked at me as Silas, not an alpha wannabe. How different things were in Asilo from my previous pride.

We sat outside Gideon’s workshop. He was drawing plans and measuring lumber for something, I wasn’t quite sure what, while the rest of us sat around doing various things.

Shaw had brought out a six-pack of some local brew that he said was good. I took his word for it, since I didn’t know a whole lot about beer. It tasted like beer to me, although I assured him it was tasty.

Cooper was reading through some sort of old journal and taking notes. He would go from being hyperfocused on reading to joining in our conversations to hyperfocused again.

Dean, on the other hand, was scrolling through his phone. Every so often, he would ask us if we liked a certain kind of food. Hopefully he was working on some menu items, because the food he was asking about sounded delicious.

Meanwhile, I was just happy to sit out in the sunshine enjoying a beer and the company. I’d never had this, alpha friends. It felt great.

“So, you’re working on the books now, right?” Gideon asked.

I nodded.

“Awesome. I want to sit down with you and talk about our building budget.” Gideon was giving me his undivided attention. Usually when people asked me about the books, it was to be nice or because money was an issue. There was genuine interest in the money side of it, for sure, but that wasn’t all this was. It was more small talk than anything.

“Do we have a building budget?” My former pride hadn’t, but then again, someone was stealing money from them, so they didn’t have it to put aside. It still bothered me that I hadn’t been able to figure out what was happening there.

Gideon shrugged. “We need one, especially if I’m adding on to your house, my house, and building another couple of cabins. Cooper is going to need a bigger house soon too.”

That was a whole lot of building. I hadn’t heard that news, but it was exciting nonetheless. The pride was growing fast. But not too fast. More it was growing from within, and that was huge.

“Well, whenever you’re ready, just let me know. I can get some numbers figured out. As far as I can tell, the books were kept well.” I didn’t have to worry about anyone stealing or other nefarious activity taking place like I did with my other pride. A lot of the budget came from the council and the enforcer packs. Mostly, we just needed money to pay for the goods we had to buy from humans.

“If it’s in our budget to buy me some milling equipment, that can save us in the long run on lumber.”

I had no idea what he meant, but I was going to price it out. He did so much work for the pride, and if there was equipment that could make it easier for him, I was all about trying to make that work.

“I’ve been making do with what I can rig up on my own, but it’d be a lot faster if I had something else.”

“I’ll talk to Morgan, or I guess you can talk to Morgan. The Forerunner would know for sure if it is something we can do. Can you send me some links with some pricing?”
