"Then who will be here?"

"I'll stay with you," says Chris.

I can see the uncertainty in her eyes. For whatever reason, she doesn't have the same connection to Chris as she does with me and Clay. I think that will come in time, but right now, I’m not going to question it.

"I'll stay." Clay steps up and squeezes her shoulder. “You go with Chris. This way you know Aria's settled here and her parents are getting the proper care and attention. I’m no good at talking to the families. You know that."

I gaze over at Chris and he shrugs and nods his approval. I know Clay is no good at emotional confrontations, and this is the best scenario for everyone.

"Okay. We'll get this over with as quickly as possible. They’re going to want to see you, babe.”

She shakes her head. "Not right now. Just tell them that I love them, but I need to do this on my own for a while. I'm no use to anyone, and the less people that are here, the safer it is for everyone. Please, Caleb. Make them see it from my point of view. I can’t deal with my family just now."

A crazy part of me understands where she's coming from, but another part of me is worried that's she shutting herself away from everything familiar to her, because she doesn't want to be around anything or anyone. I know it’s going to kill her mum hearing this news, and it’s going to kill her even more knowing her daughter doesn’t want to come home, but apart from dragging Aria home kicking screaming, there isn’t anything I can do. Aria isn’t a child anymore, and I’m not going to treat her like one.

This is the part I hate about my job. I hate breaking bad news.
