“I know what you mean.” She closes her eyes and squeezes my hand.
“Why don’t you get some sleep, babe? You look exhausted.”
Her eyes shoot open. “You won’t leave?”
“I’m not going anywhere. I promise.” I lean forward and place a kiss on her forehead. “You’re stuck with me now, remember?”
Before I pull away from her, I see the smile creep over her lips, and her body relaxes into a peaceful slumber.
“She’s really going to be okay?”
I look over at Carrick studying his sister.
“She’s going to be okay, buddy.”
And the relief that washes through me from saying six small words is immense. Now we just need to jump over the hurdles as we approach them, worry about the moment, and not everything else around us.
Together, we can do anything we set our minds to.
