I’ve been expecting an impromptu visit from someone in my family, but it doesn’t mean we’re ready for it.

“Buzz her in.” I blow out a deep breath.

Damien takes off his jacket and folds his arms over his chest. I’m glad he’s here. Maybe I won’t be so reckless.

“Just keep your cool. Think about Kally, bro.”

Kally is the only person I’ve thought about since this whole nightmare started three years ago. I doubt I’ll ever think of anyone else again.

Jared walks in with my mother behind him. I see this fiasco hasn’t changed her. She’s still all made up with her hair and make-up done. A tailored suit. Her clutch purse in her hand. Pearls around her neck. I bite my lip to keep myself quiet.

“Boys.” She walks around Jared and throws her purse down on the chair I vacated before her arrival.

“To what do we owe this pleasure, Mother?” I copy Damien’s stance and fold my arms over my chest.

I’m in no mood for anything my mother has to say today. She’s lucky I let her in.

“How’s she doing?” She looks over at Kally curiously.

“How do you think she’s doing? If everything she’s been through isn’t enough, she had to find out from my lawyer today that your precious son has been granted bail. If you agree with that, then you’re not welcome here.”

“He’s pleading not guilty, Clark. What are we supposed to do?”

I laugh. I really can’t help it. “So, did Kally rape herself? What more proof do you need?”

I grit my teeth to keep me from raising my voice, but it’s too late. Kally’s trying to sit up. I move to help her, but she pushes my arm away.

“What is she doing here?” She holds her stomach tightly and stands up, practically doubled over in pain.

“We’re just about to find out. Maybe we should get you some meds, honey.”

“How are you?” asks my mother.

“It’s a bit late for asking me that question, don’t you think, Mrs. Collinson?”

“I…”

“No. Don’t you dare try to justify your actions. You’re just as much to blame for this. You’ve got blood on your hands too.”

My mom shifts awkwardly on her feet and looks down at the ground. She genuinely looks hurt; an expression I never thought I’d see from my mother.

“I came to tell you about Colton pleading not guilty. I had nothing to do with him getting bail. I don’t not believe you, but he’s my son. You’ll understand that one day when you have your own children.”

Kally laughs hysterically, and I look between her and Damien for his help.

“I might never have children because of him! But one thing I know for sure, if I ever do have kids, they’ll be brought up to be kind to others. I would murder any of my children for causing this pain to another human being. You’re just as bad as him for standing by him. Did you never think it was weird that I never joined you for meals unless it was a dinner party? Did you not think it was strange that I spent most of my time locked away in my room? The only time I got to see people was when it was for keeping up appearances.”

My mother looks a little lost for words. She takes in a deep breath and lets it out slowly.

“Those rose-tinted glasses really need to come off, Mother. You can’t keep acting blind to your husband and son.” I sigh in frustration.

“I never want to see you again… ever,” says Kally.

“What about the funeral?” my mother asks.

“None of you are welcome to attend my daughter’s funeral.”

My mom steps forward, but Damien and I step forward at the same time so we’re surrounding Kally.
