I growl out my frustration and sit down on my couch. I run my hands through my hair, trying to give myself something to do with my hands before I break something.

“What did she say?”

“She admitted feeling suicidal, and that scares me. At least in the clinic, she’ll have twenty-four-hour care. Here, you have to work, and when your back is turned, who knows what could happen? I know you want the best for Kally. We all do. I think this is the best thing for everyone.”

“I can bring her to the clinic.” I straighten up.

Gail shakes her head. “That won’t be necessary. I’ll call a private ambulance.”

“What happens now?” asks Damien.

I feel like I’m a ticking time bomb, waiting to go off. I’ve never felt emotions like this before. It even beats the night I was told Kally would marry my asshole brother.

“I’ll make all the arrangements now. We’ll get Kally to the clinic, settled in, make a care plan, and then we’ll take it from there.”

“I can see her, right?”

Gail bites her lip. “We advise that no relative or loved one sees the patient for six weeks.”

“What? How can that help treatment?”

“You’d be surprised how much distraction family members can be. Once the six weeks are up, and if Kally agrees, we’ll get you into the clinic for some therapy sessions with her, and hopefully, by then we’ll have a better idea how long things might take.”

“I never agreed to any of this. I only called to get Kally help.”

“And we’ll give her all the help and care in the world, Clark. I promise you that.”

“Come on, bro. It’s only six weeks.”

“We’ve already lost three years!” I yell at no one in particular.

“I’ll show you to the office so you can make the calls,” says Damien.

I shake my head and throw myself back onto the couch.

“I know you don’t want to hear this right now, but this is the best thing for Kally.”

“I can’t keep her safe there, Nancy.”

“You don’t have to. You just have to hope and pray that this treatment works and you get her home soon. Letting this fester will only take her away from you longer.”

I can understand what everyone is saying. My head knows they’re right, but it will take my heart a hell of a long time to catch up. I’ve just gotten Kally home and now I’m losing her all over again. It’s a cruel fucking joke.

I stand up and walk over to her closed door. I pause before opening it, but I need to see her before she goes. I need to make her see that I fucking love her. I’ll always be here for her, no matter what. I pull myself together and walk into her room.

This time, Kally is sitting up in bed. She’s so pale you could mistake her for a ghost.

I just walk in and sit beside her, with my back resting against the headboard. Kally’s head falls and rests against my shoulder. It’s only now that I’m taking in the enormity of this situation. Tears fall from my eyes, and I don’t even try to hide them.

“I’ll be here when you’re ready, Kally. I’ll always be here for you. You need me, you just call and I’ll be there, I promise.”

“I know,” she whispers. “I’ve always known that, Clark.”

I move to wrap my arm around her shoulders and hold her tight, kissing her head, inhaling her unique scent.

“This is just another blip in the road. We’ll get through it. One day, we’ll look back on this time and see how strong it has made us.”

“Promise me two things, Clark.”
