I lift the gun in front of me and point it in Kally’s direction. Tears fall down her cheeks as she realizes what’s about to happen.

“If only you loved me like you loved Clark. You were the only one that could have possibly changed me.”

“I could never love you, Cole. You made my life miserable from day one. I feared you for the whole three years we were together. You raped me. You hurt me. You made me hate you…” Tears fell faster down her cheeks. “Not one thing about you is Clark. He’s my one and only true love and you tore us apart.”

“I hope he survives and can find it within himself to forgive me.”

“What did you do?” Kally sits forward and holds her hand over her head.

“I guess you’ll never know.”

I pull the trigger, and I don’t know what reverberates more, the bang or the screams.

Kally looks up from her position, and I fall to my knees. I look down at the blood seeping through my scrubs and smile. The door bursts open and I fall to the ground. The air in my lungs is getting less and less. The room around me is fading to black until…

Chapter 36

Kally

I look down at Colton on the ground and back up to the figure walking in the door. It isn’t until he removes his helmet that I sag back into the pillows.

“I never thought I’d be a witness to how great a sniper you actually are.”

“Did you think I was full of shit?” asks Clay.

I can hear a commotion in the hallway, and Caleb runs into the room. The moment I see him, I sob. I can’t help it. It’s like all of my pent-up emotion over the last few weeks has come to the surface and the dam bursts. Caleb rushes over to my side and wraps me in his arms.

“It’s all over, sweetheart. We’ve got you.”

“I-is he gone?”

Caleb looks down to where Gail sits back on her heels and nods.

“How did you know he was here?”

“Chris got a call from the police department that a call for help was placed by the panic button,” says Clay.

“I have a panic button under my desk that I was able to push before I showed Colton where you were. I hoped the police would get here in time if I remained calm,” says Gail.

It’s over. All of this nightmare has ended. Life is never going to be the same again, but with Clark and my family in my corner, I can do anything.

“Wait. I need to see Clark. Where is he?” I pull away from Caleb and the room goes silent. “What’s going on?” No one answers me. “Tell me!” I yell.

“Clark’s in the hospital, sweetheart.”

“I need to see him.” I try to get off the bed, but my weight-bearing ability isn’t back yet. The sedation is still overtaking my body.

“Hold on. I’ll take you to him, but there’s something you need to know.”

“Okay. Tell me.”

“Clark was shot. He’s had surgery, lost a lot of blood, and is now in intensive care.”

“But he’ll be okay. Caleb. He’ll be okay, right?”

“We don’t know, sweetheart. It’s too early to tell.”

My heart breaks all over again, and this time it’s a good thing Colton is dead because I want to kill him myself.
