“I love Eliza,” he continued, “and whether you approve or not, I’m going to ask her to marry me. If you want more time to adjust, I’ll be nice and wait it out a little longer, but I’m not delaying my happiness or hers any longer because you don’t approve.” He lifted the fresh drink to his lips, guzzling it all at once, then lowered it with an evil smirk. “Would you stop doing what you’re doing if Eliza didn’t approve?”

“What?” My brows knitted.

“You heard me.”

“I have no idea what you mean.”

“Alright.” He stood. “I gotta go take a piss.” He patted my shoulder as he strode by but stopped to lean down close to my ear. “When I get back, you can tell me what’s really going on with you and Maddie.”

“There’s—” My voice trailed off. He’d already walked away by the time I processed his words. “Fuck,” I muttered, gulping down the rest of my drink.

By now, I was feeling tipsy. Sadly, I’d thought about her tonight, picturing her sitting on my lap while I fingered her tight pussy under the table, not caring who was watching. Traces of her nails on my skin were still in thin, red visible streaks. If I touched them through my shirt, I could still feel the remnants of the way she dug them into me. My cock stirred, and I wanted to text her, but she was hanging out with Elizabeth, and I didn’t want to raise further suspicion.

While Vincenzo was away, I thought about a way to throw him off the trail, but I hated lying to him. Even though he deserved it after what he did to me. It was no use. I only hoped he wouldn’t tell my daughter before I had the chance.

Unable to resist Maddie any longer, I slid my phone from my pocket, glancing back over my shoulder to make sure no one was sneaking up on me. Against my better judgment, I texted her, risking Elizabeth being right by her phone when the message went through.

How’s it going?

MADDIE

While James was with Vincenzo, I was at Elizabeth’s new home. The same home we’d both grown up playing hide and seek in during Vincenzo’s annual gatherings. Those parties created some of the best moments of my entire life. And back then, I didn’t understand who he was. He was just… mysterious. The atmosphere was different now, but not in a bad way. We were just adults.

I fell back lazily on the sofa in the family room, sipping my third glass of red wine. I’d always told Elizabeth everything. Harboring such a big secret that directly affected her felt horrible, but I knew if anyone would understand, it’d be her; had it been anyone other than her dad. If it’d been one of their other friends, she would’ve encouraged me to go after it. We were both a sucker for older men and the soreness in both my ass and pussy had been reminding me of it all night.

“Girl,” she snickered, “you have to tell me! Are you falling hard for him?”

Almost choking on my drink, I cackled. “Not at all.”

“Then he must be giving you amazing sex because I’ve never in my life seen you smiling like crazy.” She tucked her toes under the center cushion between us. “I can’t wait to meet him! I can practically see the hearts in your eyes tonight. I always thought it’d be Antonio.”

Besides my twin brother, she and I had always been each other’s biggest support system, so it pained me to not be able to tell her. I let out a nervous giggle, lifting my glass to my lips. It was empty. I guess I’d gulped the rest while she was talking. “More wine?”

She snorted at my glass. “You’re not going to be able to drive home.”

I waved her off. “I’ll go before I get drunk.”

Standing, I sauntered into the kitchen, seeing we’d finished the bottle on the island. I came to a stop in front of one of the countless wine racks they owned. Vincenzo had an entire wine cellar but had smaller racks in several rooms downstairs. “Which bottle should I open?!” I called out over my shoulder.

“Any are fine.”

I jumped at the sound of her close voice, whirling around with my hand on my chest. “You scare—”

She was holding my phone out. The look on her face said it all. “You got a text.”

“Who is it?” The blood drained from my head.

She strode over, handing it to me. “No idea. Your lock screen is set to private, but I’m hoping it’s from the sexy guy you refuse to tell me about.”

“Shut up,” I laughed, though I was sure my nerves were showing through. She knew me way too well. “I promise when there’s something to tell, I will.”

And I would. I couldn’t lie to her forever. I didn’t want to. I just didn’t even know what was going on between her dad and me. But I knew Elizabeth well enough to know she’d be pissed.

She’d probably never speak to me and if she did, she’d have a million questions. Questions I didn’t have the answers to right now, anyway. Regardless, I needed to speak to James and make sure we were on the same page before either of us told anyone… if we ever told anyone.

I was crazy about him, but I wasn’t delusional enough to think we’d ever be more than just a hookup. All the talk during sex was only that. Talk. While I was living my fantasy, he was living out some of his. Reluctantly, I opened my messages, seeing one from him.
