Would you come here for a moment, please?

Yes, sir.

Though she maintained a professional tone, we both knew exactly what she was doing. She was at work when I arrived this morning and I’d been in and out of meetings since I got off the elevator. The office was buzzing with a lot of activity, and I’d barely gotten a chance to speak to her. I needed to see her. To let her know I was thinking about her.

The office door opened, and she stepped in with a pen and notepad. “What can I do for you, Mr. Whitman?”

“Sit.” I nodded toward one of the two chairs facing my desk.

She sashayed toward me, laying the pen and pad on the conference table as she passed. Sitting, she crossed her knee over the other. Pushing back from my desk, I stood and strode around to her. I bent over, gripping the armrests on either side of her.

She took hold of my tie, slipping it between her fingers. I studied her beauty in silence for a moment before pressing my lips to hers. I wanted so badly to lay her across my desk and fuck her again, but by the way she walked into my office, I could tell she was still sore.

“How are you feeling this morning? We didn’t get to talk before I left your place.”

She grinned, darting her eyes toward the Blue Room, then back at me. “Good enough to step back in there right now.”

I ran my thumb over her lips. “Vinny and his friends are coming in for a meeting soon, and I needed to talk to you first.”

She nodded. “I’ll behave and stay out of the way. Don’t worry.”

“Behave?” I chuckled. “Yes. Stay out of the way?” I stood, lifting my hand to my chin. “I actually need you in here for this one.”

“Why?” Her eyes widened.

“I need you to record the meeting and take notes. This one’s going on the books for an upcoming trial. I need you in here on official business this time.”

“Are you going to fuck with me again?”

I held my hand out, and she placed her palm in mine. Tugging her to her feet, I slipped up the side of her pale blue blouse and lowered the side of her skirt, checking on her mark. “Let’s get one thing straight.” I circled it with the pad of my thumb, returning my gaze to hers. “I don’t fuck with you. I edge you. There’s a difference.”

She lifted her brows. “Fine. Whatever you say. You’re the boss.”

“Madison,” I warned, “don’t provoke me.”

She opened her mouth to respond, but I pressed a finger to her lips. I didn’t have time for her brattiness now. I wasn’t done with why I called her into my office. “I also need you to attend an event with me on Friday night.”

“What?”

“As my assistant, not my date.” I sighed. “The annual charity gala Alicia and I attend every year. Fancy. Stuffy people. My assistant usually comes too but I have no wife any longer, and well,” I gestured to her, “you’re my assistant for now.” I perched on the edge of the desk, nestling my hands inside my pockets.

“Is it the one you host every year?”

I nodded. “The same one you attended with Eliza a few years ago.”

“Oh,” she exhaled, “will, um, she be there?”

“She will. Vinny will as well. And Lucas, of course.”

“Okay.”

I knew she wanted to say more. As always, her lips parted ever so slightly, and my eyes homed in on them. I took a step forward, reaching for her sides but the door opened, and I took a step back, running my fingers through my hair. Maddie spun around.

“Good afternoon, gentlemen,” I greeted, placing a hand on Maddie’s lower back. “Table, now,” I whispered before making my way to my desk, grabbing my laptop and leather binder with the case file inside.

Everyone exchanged their greetings with both Maddie and me, as we all congregated around the conference table and settled.
