“You didn’t!”

“They’re fucking freaks.”

“Together?”

“Mmhmm, and it was the best sex I’ve ever had. We booked a suite upstairs for after the party.”

“But my situation is slightly different,” I exhaled.

“Every situation is different.” He slid his hands in his pockets, smiling in the direction of Clara and Myla, holding up a finger. “One minute.” He returned his focus to me. “We can talk about this later, if you want.”

I nodded.

He put his hand on my shoulder. “I’ll drive you to the hospital after Eliza finds out,” he whispered, glancing behind me before ambling toward the twins.

“Damnit,” I whispered.

“Hey!”

Startled, I whirled around. “Hey, girl!”

Elizabeth leaned in, hugging me, and I made eye contact with James over her shoulder. He was talking to my father and Vincenzo and offered me a subtle smile before he turned his attention back to them. Elizabeth took a step back.

“God, you look so gorgeous!”

My eye caught something shiny on her finger and I squealed, grabbing her hand. “You didn’t call me!”

She giggled. “I wanted to show you tonight. It’s been killing me keeping it from you!”

I threw my arms around her. “Congrats, I’m so happy for you!”

“Thank you!”

I took a step back, beaming.

“He told me he talked to you and my dad before he did it.”

“Yeah,” I nodded, “which I was pretty honored about.” I snickered. “Nervous but honored.”

She laughed. “He’s like your biggest fan.”

“What?!” I darted my gaze at him and back at her.

She shrugged. “I mean, he’s always loved you and your fam, of course, but tonight he actually said he really loved seeing you a few times at my dad’s office.”

Now, I was dying a little inside. I wasn’t sure if he said that to her because he was sending me a warning of some sort, knowing she’d tell me, or because he meant it. Either way, the guilt was eating me alive. But so was the need to be near James. I loved him. Damnit, I love your dad. I repeated in my head over and over. So many times, I thought about how to tell her.

“God, look at him.”

“What?” I ripped myself from my thoughts, seeing her staring in the direction of our fathers and Vincenzo. “Oh, yeah, your man is the shit.” I giggled.

“No,” she twisted to me before turning back to him, “my dad.”

“What about him?”

“I’ve never seen him smiling that way.” She clasped her hands together in front of the necklace hanging on her chest. “I love it.”

“What way?”
