“What?” Luke asked.
Passing him his phone, I shifted my attention to my daughter. “What would you like to do today?”
Her face lit up before she scrunched it. “Does this mean you have to work early?”
Leaning forward, I propped on my elbows with a broad grin. “A little, but not too early.” It was only a half-lie. Normally, I was back at work by 7:30 p.m. on the nights we were open.
“Is he coming with us wherever we go?”
I glanced over my shoulder, then took a sip of my coffee.
Luke propped on the island next to me, leaning into me. “I would hope I’m invited.”
“YES!” Maddie sat back, beaming, as she pumped a fist. “I wanna go to the science museum.”
Luke held his hand out, and she gave him five. “I’m in, cutie pie.”
She hopped off the stool, sprinting from the room.
He and I stood straight at the same time. He put his hands on my arms, lowering his gaze on mine. “What are you walking in to tonight?”
“Ian’s got guys coming in, and he said he might have to sacrifice Jenna or Amber.”
“The fucking Italians,” he growled. “I’ll cancel my trip.”
Laying a palm on his chest, I toyed with his black cross necklace, zipping it back and forth slowly on the matching chain. I shook my head. “You know I can handle myself.”
“But I wan?—”
“Please, don’t.” I pressed my lips to his. “If you act like a protective boyfriend, Ian’s going to give us both hell. You have to trust him… and me.”

“This should be fun,” I muttered to myself, smoothing my black pencil skirt. I checked my vivid red lipstick in my phone’s front camera before spotting Lonnie at the reception desk. I scanned the main lobby downstairs. My phone vibrated, and I scrolled over to the texts Luke sent back-to-back.
Can’t be too bad if he wants you present, baby.
Calm down.
Nibbling the inside of my bottom lip, I sighed, typing out a response.
How did you know?
I know you well.
Snorting, I darted my eyes around the room.
That and I’m watching the cameras on my phone. ;)
Of course, he is. Luke watched the security cameras nonstop. While I was the ears of the club, he was the eyes. I glanced up at the closest camera, blowing it my sexiest kiss, hoping it was the one he was viewing now.
And you look good enough to eat which is exactly what I plan to do to you the minute I’m home.
