I wished a lot of things were happening right now, but zero of them had to do with him, me, and him laughing at me in these fucking woods. I dropped my arms. “Fuck you, Wolf.”

Another wish I had was stronger words. I wanted something harder that cut deeper.

It was the least I could do.

I had nothing heavier in my arsenal, and since I didn’t, I had to settle for leaving. Gripping my camera bag, I attempted to do just that, but right away, Wolf strode behind me.

“Red—Fawn. Would you wait?”

I didn’t and made strides to pick up the pace no matter how futile. I knew he was faster than me, but I had to try.

I had to.

This was my only thought as I broke off into a sprint. I wasn’t a fast runner. Hell, I wasn’t a runner. Like zero physical activity outside of my photography work. I also wasn’t the lightest girl, but I gave it my best damn shot to get away from this asshole.

He’d broken my heart.

Into a million fucking pieces he had, so, yeah, I did what I could to get away. He caught up with me about the time I passed a tree, and when he worked me around, I gave him no fists this time.

I just spat.

It landed right in his stupid, fucking face. His pretty face crafted by the fucking gods. Wolf probably shouldn’t be considered pretty. He was an asshole and a monster.

But that didn’t stop how beautiful he was.

Physically, aesthetically, he was perfection, and there was the rub. He was this terrible person wrapped up in this gorgeous package.

The better to deceive you with, my dear…

He really was a big bad wolf, a beast.

And he was letting me go.

He did in order to use his hoodie sleeve to wipe the spit away. He stared at it. “I deserved that.”

What?

I honestly didn’t believe what I heard, so angry, shaking. Wolf put more distance between us, but once he did, he sighed.

“But even still, you lied, and I’m going to walk you back to the house now.”

I was still trying to recover from the fact that he said he deserved being spat on. “What are you talking about?”

The look he shot me…

Frustration came to mind. Especially when he scrubbed his face. He tucked his hands under his arms. “Come on, Red. You lied, and now you’re in the woods taking pictures by yourself when there could be drifters and shit out here. It’s not safe. Dangerous. Now, you need to come back to the house—”

“You are joking.” This was a joke. Had to be. “You have to be joking.”

His lips thinned into a hard line. “I’m not.”

“Oh, you gotta be.” I was laughing, like hysterically at this point, which had Wolf eyeing the trees. I crossed my arms. “You want me to actually believe you care?”

I wasn’t buying it. Not for shit did I buy it, and in the next moment, Wolf was shaking his head.

“I’m not joking. You’re out here by yourself, and you don’t know the area.”

I was still laughing, rubbing the tears out of my eyes.
