“I didn’t come here to debate this,” Rook says. “You have your orders and now Hawk will tell you where to find the guy.”

Hawk clears his throat, eyeing the three like they’ve done him a personal wrong. “This thing could end the war for us. It’s the first time since it started that we’ve been this close to the leaders. But if you kill him, we’re back to square one.”

I’m sure he’s about to explain how that’s so, but all I’m thinking is that this job will take me away from Ariel and I don’t want to go, not after I finally made some progress with her last night. So, a part of me supports Fossil’s objections wholeheartedly.

“It seems Joker and some of his crew are camped out just a couple of miles out of town. We have no idea why. Probably to watch us like we’re watching them,” Hawk says, and I very nearly smile in relief.

We’re staying right here.

Hawk spends the next hour or so briefing us on what they want us to do, how and where. Fossil once again looks asleep by the end of it.

“This is a fucking insult!” Bane snaps as soon as Rook and Hawk leave. “We’ve been with this club for, what, ten years? And now they want us babysitting some nobody? Un-fucking-believable.”

“You hear them. This could be the guy who will end the war,” I say.

Edge cringes and the rest turn to me sharply, anger and disgust on their faces.

“What are you talking about?” Bane asks. “Who wants this war to end?”

“I sure as fuck don’t,” Fossil announces. “I never felt alive like I do killing all those no-good idiots.”

“When’d you become such a suck-up?” Bane asks me.

I shrug and don’t say anything. I’ve already put my foot in my mouth once and I’m in no hurry to do it again.

“This job is weird,” Archer says. “When was the last time any of you were sent on anything other than a killing?”

We all look at each other, shaking our heads.

“Not since I was a prospect,” Archer concludes. “They know what we do best is murder. So, what is up with this job?”

Edge stands up and stretches. “Killing this Joker guy is what it’ll probably come down to in the end. And then we’ll be best placed to do it. I wouldn’t read anything more into it.”

They all perk up at that idea. Bane actually looks gleeful as he nods, slaps Edge on the back and tells him he’s probably right. They wouldn’t be happy to hear the upcoming leader of the war against us is about to be murdered if they’re the rats… right?

I really wish the execs gave us more of a plan on how to flush them out, because I don’t know where to start.

“We should probably ride sooner rather than later,” Fossil says. “Five miles under the high noon sun isn’t a lot but after the night I had, it’s too much.”

The other two agree with him and we decide to meet in front of the clubhouse in fifteen.

I take off my boot, pretending I got something stuck in it, and Edge lingers while the other three leave the room.

“How are we gonna do this?” I ask as soon as I’m sure they’re far enough away.

He shrugs. “They could already be calling this Joker guy if they’re working for him. I don’t know what the point of this job is either.”

“It’s probably all part of some master plan we know nothing about yet,” I say and put my boot back on. “But we probably shouldn’t let them out of our sight from here on in. And I’m not looking forward to that.”

“You and me both,” he says. “So what do you think? One of us stays with them at all times?”

I nod and we share a loaded look of mutual regret before leaving the room to start putting that kernel of a plan into action. It’s time to do what must be done. And stop worrying about how I’ll come out on the other side.

Hell, if those three start suspecting we’re here to spy on them, there might not be an other side to worry about. They weren’t just boasting before. They are some of the MC’s best and most ruthless killers.
