“Who?” Griz said. “Ripper?”

“It doesn’t matter,” Major Navarro said. “It’s a shame. We’ll simply have to remove you from the game, so that those in your organization more… friendly to us… can talk sense and move our agenda forward.”

“You think it’s going to be that easy?” Griz said.

“Don’t be foolish,” the major said. “I have three men with assault rifles no more than ten yards away. Even if you manage to draw your little pistols, they will cut you down before you can get a shot off. Now, drop your guns on the ground and get down on your knees.”

Now it was Griz’s turn to snort in derision. “I don’t think so.”

“This is not a request. I can have my men shoot out your kneecaps first, if you like.”

There was no way Griz was going out on his knees. He knew where this was heading. If he and Pony gave up their guns, and got on their knees, all that would buy them was a quick bullet in the head.

Well, fuck that. If he was going out, he was going to take this smooth talking asshole of a major along with him. After that, come what may.

He traded a look with Pony, and saw the same sentiment in his eyes. This was going to be it, then. One loud, last blaze of glory.

Griz lowered his knees slightly, getting ready to spring forward and grab Major Navarro by his neck. After that, he’d hold the major close as a human shield as he shot it out with the cartel soldiers and see how many he could take with him.

Just as he was about to spring, one of the cartel soldiers put a finger to his earpiece and said to the major, “Sir!”

“What?” the major hissed.

“Sir, we have someone cutting in on our radio channel,” the cartel soldier said.

“What?” Major Navarro said. “Who?”

“He calls himself Condor.”

“Jesus,” Griz whispered to himself.

Fucking Devil. The situation was as serious as a heart attack, and Devil had to fuck around with his ridiculous code name.

“Condor?” Major Navarro said. “Who is Condor?”

“Condor is… one of our best men,” Griz forced himself to say.

“Long history in SOCOM,” Pony added quickly. “Guy’s a legend in the special operations community.”

“Well,” Major Navarro said, looking like he wanted to spit. “Ripper never mentioned this Condor person. I’d call that quite an oversight on his part.”

“Sir, if they have the capability to monitor our comms…” the cartel solider said.

“Yes, yes,” Major Navarro said, annoyed.

“Sir!”

Now the major followed his soldier’s pointed finger and looked down at his chest. There, right over his heart, a bright red dot shone. A laser sight.

“What is this?” the major said quickly. “You’ve got a sniper in the trees? With a laser sight?”

“That’s right,” Griz said. “You mentioned your precautions earlier. This is ours. You’ve got your three guys with rifles standing out in the open with us. We’ve got… Condor… in the trees, with a bead on you. How many of them do you think he can take out, Pony?”

“All four, no doubt,” Pony said. “There’s no hard cover out here. Condor will drop three of them before they even make a break for it. I’ve seen him shoot. Man, it’s really something.”

Major Navarro’s face began to twist into a scowl, and he looked like he might actually stomp his foot in his rage. He barked at his men in Spanish, then seemed to get himself back under control before he spoke again.

“It looks like we’ve underestimated you,” he said. “Good for you. Good for you. But don’t underestimate us, either. You would be wise not to provoke us.”
