“I said, I’m good, Griz,” Wyatt said. “I had to be here for this. This meeting is going to determine what this club does next, and I can’t just sit on the sidelines.”

“Just don’t push it, okay?” Griz said. “I can’t lose you and Dad too.”

“Relax, brother,” Wyatt said, giving him a weak smile. “You’re not going to lose either one of us. I’ll be kicking you in the ass with this leg in no time, and Boomer’s going to be fine.”

“I guess so. I hope so.”

“Where did you go, anyway?” Wyatt said.

“I had to leave the room,” Griz said. “I was just getting in the way, and Kate…”

“Kate’s fine.”

“I saw the way she looked at me. She blames me.”

“No, she doesn’t.”

“She should,” Griz said. “It was my fault you got shot.”

“Stop. This is the life, man. Living the way we do… there’s always risk.”

“Still. I feel like I charged in there without thinking, and you paid the price.”

“Bullshit,” Wyatt said. “I was right there with you. Everyone that was there, agreed to be there. To take our chances.”

“I guess,” Griz said.

Wyatt shook his head. “I’d tell you to stop blaming yourself, to stop putting this all on yourself, but you’re not going to listen to me. So just… get drunk or something, take your mind off of it. Get laid, maybe.”

Griz shrugged imperceptibly. He didn’t meet Wyatt’s eyes, and that seemed to really get Wyatt’s attention.

“Hang on,” Wyatt said. “Where did you say you went? Just now?”

“I was upstairs,” Griz said.

“Alone?”

Griz tried to think of the best thing to say. “Maybe not.”

“You dog,” Wyatt said slyly.

Griz let out a little laugh.

“With who? Nobody’s here except Kate and… no,” Wyatt said.

Griz shrugged again.

“No shit,” Wyatt said, grinning now even through his paleness and discomfort. “You got in there? With Becca? How?”

“I honestly have no idea,” Griz said.

Wyatt blew out a breath. “I have so many questions.”

“You’re not the only one. I still have no idea what’s going on between us.”

“Let me get this straight,” Wyatt said. “I got shot, and you got laid?”

Griz really didn’t know what to say to that, so he said, “Sorry?”
