“If I move too fast, I’ll blow my cover,” Piper said.

“Yes, but we can’t keep going on and on like this and coming up with nothing,” Harris said.

“It’s not nothing.”

“It’s nothing,” Harris said. “Rumors that they might be dealing weed. Yippee. With all that we’ve seen coming out of that area, that’s nothing. It’s embarrassing.”

“I was trained to keep my cover as a priority,” Piper said.

“Yes, but you have to know when to take some calculated risks to make something happen,” Harris said. “All right. What about planting a listening device?”

“Worth a shot, I guess,” Piper said. “But they conduct their business in a back room, and I don’t have access.”

“Get access.”

“It’s not that simple,” Piper said. “I’m never there alone. And nobody but brothers go in there, with rare exception.”

“There’s got to be something!” Harris said, with an intensity that surprised Piper.

“Why are you so intent on this club?” Piper said.

Harris frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, you’re pushing awfully hard to find something that might not even be there.”

“They’re outlaw bikers, Marino,” Harris said. “The operative word being ‘outlaw’.”

“Yes, but…”

“But what?”

“I don’t just keep my eyes and ears open in the club, you know,” Piper said. “While I’ve been in place at the bar, I’ve asked some discreet questions around town.”

“And?”

“And… this MC does not sound like the typical outlaw biker gang,” Piper said.

“How so?”

“The locals all seem to like them,” Piper said. “And they seem to know everybody. I’ve even seen some friendly interactions between the MC and the local PD.”

“You think the local police are in their pocket?” Harris said.

“Maybe. But it seems more like… I don’t know,” Piper said. “Mutual respect, maybe?”

“Mutual…” Harris said, then fixed her with a stare. “Marino.”

“I know how that sounds,” Piper said quickly.

“Do you?” Harris said.

“Yes.”

“I don’t think you do,” Harris said. “Because it sounds like you’re getting too close to your subjects. Are you getting too close?”

Piper said, “No.”

“Are you sure?” Harris said. “It happens all of the time. An undercover goes in, starts making friends, starts forming attachments, and the next thing you know, they’re compromising themselves… and their careers… for a bunch of dirtbag criminals.”
