With that, Nikki pushed the button to hang up the phone like she was spiking a football after a touchdown.

“Woo!” she cried, holding up victory fists.

“Yes!” Devil said. “Hell, yes, babe! Slam dunk!”

Despite herself, Piper actually felt somewhat relieved. “I can’t believe that…”

“Don’t say it worked,” Pony said. “Not yet. I mean, this is Devil we’re talking about.”

“All right!” Devil said, clapping his hands and rubbing them together. “Phase Two!”

“What are you going to do when he shows up at the hospital looking to meet a Dr. Redpepper that doesn’t exist?” Pony said.

“That’s Phase Two,” Nikki explained. “I work at the reception desk, so I’ll intercept him there, tell him I’m Maria, and put him in an exam room that isn’t being used.”

“Then what?”

“Nikki puts the virus on his phone while he’s being examined by Doctor Redpepper,” Devil said. “Me.”

“But he’ll have to be totally distracted for the entire time she’d doing that,” Piper said. “And if he catches on…”

“Don’t worry! I got this,” Devil said, putting first one hand on Pony’s shoulder, then the other on Piper’s. “Igotthis. Trust me.”

As one, Pony and Piper each let out a sigh.

Almost eleven fifteen.

Nikki had wanted to spend more time prepping Devil, but Devil kept getting distracted, either wanting to make out, or to watch Youtube videos about chimpanzee tribes going to war with each other, or some other random damn thing. Now, she felt like she and Devil were about to take a quiz for which they hadn’t done sufficient studying.

Devil didn’t seem to be worried at all. He seemed more interested in posing in the mirror of the men’s bathroom than anything else.

“How do I look?” he said. “Do I look like a doctor?”

“Almost,” Nikki said. “With the long sleeve T shirt on under your scrubs, it covers up all of the tattoos. Make sure you always look like you just finished reading a book. And nod a lot, like you already knew ahead of time what somebody just told you.”

“I understand,” Devil said, nodding.

“That’s it! That’s it, exactly. Now, you just wait in the bathroom until I text you. Stay out of sight. You don’t want anyone asking you questions. And Devil.”

“What?”

“Don’t wander off and get into things.”

Devil looked hurt. “I would never.”

“Mmm-hmmm. Whatever, just don’t.”

Nikki left him in the men’s room, taking her position at the front desk. It was a slow day, thankfully, which should make it easier to direct Harris where she wanted him to go without any other patients complicating the issue.

On the other hand, with less people there, there was less hustle and bustle to cover up her and Devil’s shenanigans. It might make it easier for them to get caught.

What happens to people who pretend to be doctors? she began to wonder, and, while she was lost in those thoughts, someone approached the front desk and stood in front of her expectantly.

“Excuse me?” they said.

Will we go to jail for that?Nikki thought. Will it be on the news? My parents would see it.
