“What?” Carly said. “Wecanrob him?”

“No, no, it’s the pattern of activity in the account. Money disappears in big chunks, then reappears a few weeks later. Happens over and over. But he’s not getting ahead.”

Pony said, “I don’t understand.”

“He’s getting money sent to him… probably bribes… but then it’s gone. He’s not getting ahead, not making any progress. It just goes right back to where it came from… got it. Got it!”

Pony said, “So he’s bad with his money?

“You’re close. He’s losing it gambling, is my bet. I’ve seen this pattern before. Habitual gamblers, lose and lose in big chunks, then get a pile back when they arrange for more credit, or sell something off, or steal something in order to fuel their habit. It forms this exact same pattern.”

“So you think Harris has a gambling problem?”

“Not only that, but he’s gambling with the same people that are fronting him cash. God, now it all makes sense.”

“Good,” Carly said. “I like sense.”

Pony said, “He’s been getting into a hole with Navarro, hasn’t he?”

Piper nodded. “My bet is, for quite a while.”

“Probably got his start there,” Pony continued. “Navarro cleared up a debt, gratis, no strings attached, knowing that Harris would be back. That he couldn’t help himself.”

“Right,” Piper said. “And once he was on the hook, Navarro could start to squeeze him, just a little at first, something completely innocuous and tiny that nobody would care about or notice. Fix a parking ticket or something as minor.”

“And then once that was done, Navarro could use the implied threat of exposing their relationship to keep nudging Harris further and further down the dark road.”

“Wow,” Carly said. “You guys, like, really know this stuff.”

“Cop,” Piper said, with a nod toward Pony. “Outlaw. This is kind of our thing.”

“So, this is it, right?” Carly said. “The evidence we need?”

“Hopefully. Hopefully it’s enough… what’s this?”

“More gambling debts getting forgiven?” Pony asked.

“No… this one… this is a deposit that Harris sends to another account. Not a gambling loss back to Navarro.”

“He’sthe one bribing somebody?” Pony said. “Harris? Who’s he bribing?”

“That’s what I’m trying to find out. It’s another Cayman account… heh. Dummy.”

“Who, Harris?”

“No, no. Harris covered his tracks,” Piper said. “And he was being smart, sending it to another Caymans account. Difficult to track that. Except, the guy he bribed, immediately moved it out of the Caymans account and to his regular, personal account here in the good old USA. Where I can get his name.”

“Whoever Harris bribed, was a little too eager to grab onto that cash and spend it. Got sloppy,” Pony said. “How much was it?”

“Thirty grand.”

“You have the name?”

“Yeah. Yeah, it’s… hunh. Carly, do you remember the name of that cop in Philly who arrested you?”

“You bet I do,” Carly said. “Barry? Barney?”

“Bailey?”
