“Come on!” Piper said again.

“I’m not saying I don’t believe you, Piper. It definitely looks sketchy. But what I am saying is, with what is being said about you around here, you’re going to want more than this to take on someone with Harris’s reputation.”

“Shit,” Piper said. So much for the easy road. Still, this had been more or less what she’d expected, so she launched into Plan B. “What about this transfer, a few weeks ago? Do you see the one I mean?”

“Yes. He transfers money from his Cayman account, to another one. If this were another case, I’d say they put some money out there as a bribe.”

“Right. Exactly. And I know where it went.”

“Where?”

“Philly cop named Bailey,” Piper said. “Get this… he’s the arresting officer in my sister’s drug case. You know, my sister who doesn’t even know what weed smells like?”

“I know what weed smells like,” Carly protested, but Piper shushed her.

“I always thought that charge sounded like bullshit,” Jane said. “From what you told me, the only thing anyone is likely to find in your sister’s purse is an excessive amount of snack food.”

“Bailey’s the arresting officer. Harris sent him money so he would plant that shit on Carly, and that way Harris could use her situation as leverage against me.”

“Against you? To do what?”

“He tried to get me to plant evidence as well. At the MC.”

“You mean that shitshow of a search that just went down? Harris has been scurrying around trying to blame that on you. He claimed that there was supposed to be drugs present, but weren’t, and you must’ve hidden the evidence to cover for the MC. Something like that.”

“That’s all bullshit,” Piper said. “He threatened to leave me out in the cold if I didn’t plant a kilo of heroin in the clubhouse.”

“Why? Why would he do that? With his career, it’s not like he’s desperate for a win.”

“Navarro’s pressuring him to take out the MC.”

“What does Navarro care about the MC?”

“They’re in his way. He wants to establish himself over this territory and the MC has been holding him back. So he’s squeezing Harris to use his position at the Bureau to take out the MC for him.”

Once again, Jane paused on the other end of the line. “This is… this is a lot, Piper.”

“No shit. I’m in the middle of it, you don’t have to tell me.”

“Okay. Let’s say I believe all of this.”

“Let’s say?”

“Well, damn, Piper,” Jane said, “you haven’t heard all the stuff they’re saying around here! And Harris, he’s got a serious reputation, you know? It isn’t going to be easy to convince people that he’s gone sideways, especially this far sideways!”

“We have those financial records.”

“I’m telling you, that’s not enough. He could wriggle his way out of that, pull some strings, call in old favors, and then…”

“And then I’m fucked,” Piper said. “All right. I thought that might be the case. What about if I flip Bailey?”

“The dirty cop from Philly? Get him to confess to taking a bribe from Harris? That might… yeah, that would definitely do it. There’s no way even Harris’s best buddies could deny that kind of evidence. They’ll end up distancing themselves from him like he stinks of shit.”

“All right. That’s what I’ll do, then.”

“Piper. You need to watch your step.”

“No shit.”
