“What about you, Pony?” she said. “What are you up to today?”

He didn’t have much going on, not during the day. Later, he’d be infiltrating the street bike racers, but until then, he was mostly just planning on getting some exercise and maybe a little pistol practice.

“Um, it’s a range day,” he settled on saying.

“Range day?” Piper said, perking up a bit. “Shooting range?”

“Yeah,” Pony said. “I go as often as I can.”

“Sounds like a good time,” Piper said.

“Do you shoot?” Pony asked.

“Oh, hells yeah. I am a total gun bunny,” Piper said.

“Really?”

“What? I can’t like guns?”

“No, I…” Pony said. “Of course you can like guns.”

Piper looked him up and down. “I’ll bet that you think that I can’t keep up with you on the range.”

At first, Pony thought he might have mis-stepped and ruined his chances, but the sparkle in Piper’s eyes and the hint of a smile on her lips made him decide that now was as good a time as any to finally make his move.

“Not at all,” Pony said. “I mean, I don’t think that at all. Maybe, if you’d like to…”

“What are you guys talking about?”

Devil. It was Devil, stepping right on top of his sentence, right on his toes, so to speak. Right in the way. He’d seemed to materialize out of nowhere, winking into existence like a cock blocking leprechaun.

Pony did his best not to grit his teeth. Devil was a creature onto himself, and there was no point in getting angry orfrustrated with him, just like there was no point in getting angry or frustrated with a dog for eating something off of the floor once it was dropped.

“Shooting guns,” Pony said.

“Oh, now we’re talking!” Devil said. “I love guns! You like guns, Pippen?”

Piper said, “Piper.”

“Right, right,” Devil said.

“Why yes, I do like guns, Demon,” Piper said.

Devil said, “Devil.”

“Right, right,” Piper said.

“Oh, okay,” Devil said with a nod. “I get it. I see what you did there. Good one, Piper. So, what, are you going shooting today, Pony?”

“Yeah,” Pony said, almost dreading what he knew Devil was going to say next.

“Sweet! Let’s all go! You, me, Pippen… Piper! Ha! See, I was just messing with you. What do you say?” Devil said, confirming all of Pony’s fears. The whole point was to get to spend some time with Piper away from the rest of the club, and now Devil was parachute-landing in the middle of it all to be a third wheel.

“Sounds great to me,” Piper said. “I’ll stop by my place and get my pistol.”

“Nice,” Devil said. “Me, too. This is great. We’ll all meet up at the range. Right, Pony?”

“Right, Devil,” Pony said, slowly, deliberately, staring at Devil with every carefully spoken word. “It will be great. It will be great, that we’re finally going shooting together.”
