“Your sister? Charges have been dropped. I’d say the Philly PD is eager to try to make this go away as quickly as possible, in the hopes of avoiding a lawsuit from your sister.”

“Which she could do.”

“That’s her business,” Kendrick said. “What we’re here to determine, is what your future is going to be with the federal government.”

“I’m guessing that’s why this man is here,” Piper said, nodding to the strange face in the room.

“You guess correctly. This is Agent Winston of the DEA. We’re setting up a joint task force.”

“You’re going after the cartel,” Piper said to the DEA agent.

“Every single damn one of them,” Winston said.

“Pretty ambitious.”

“You bet,” he said. “And to get any real headway, I need people who can… walk both sides of the line and not get lost.”

Piper did her best not to smile. It’s going to work out, Pony had said. It was starting to look like he was right.

But, she’d learned a long time ago how easy it was to talk yourself out of a good deal, so she thought carefully before speaking again.

“I’m listening,” she said.

“You have a unique situation,” Kendrick said.

“That’s one way of putting it.”

“You were able to fit in with this biker gang…”

“MC.”

“You were able to fit in with this MC, walk among them, gain their trust, and even after they discovered you were a federal agent, they still came to your aid.”

“I’d say they’re a rather unique MC.”

“If we’re going to win the fight against the cartels, we’re going to need agents who can work with the more unsavory elements of society to get the information we need.”

“Unsavory.”

“Let’s just say criminal, then,” Kendrick said with a shrug. “And uh, this individual you had a… personal relationship with, this…”

“Pony,” she said. “He goes by Pony.”

“Pony. You’ve been very clear that he’s not involved in the trafficking of any narcotics. Correct?”

“The MC moves marijuana, I’m pretty sure.”

Kendrick and Winston looked at each other, smirking. It was Winston who spoke.

“Nobody gives a shit about weed, Marino,” he said. “That stuff will be legalized across the board sooner or later. So no heroin, no meth, no fentanyl?”

“No,” Piper said. “No, in fact, the MC goes to great lengths to keep that sort of thing out of their territory.”

“Confirms the chatter we’ve heard on our end from Navarro’s people,” Kendrick said. “Hmm. Rather unique MC, indeed. So you think this Pony would be on board?”

“On board?” Piper said.

Rather than explain, Kendrick gestured to the agent guarding the door and said, “Let’s just bring him in here and let him speak for himself.”
