“That’s exactly what we want,” Kendrick said.

“We’re not rats.”

“We’re not asking you to be rats.”

“We’re not going to be the puppets of the government either.”

“Don’t want you to be.”

“What do you want?”

“We want allies, Pony. Allies with mutual interests.”

“You want Navarro.”

“I want the whole damn cartel. But I’ll start with Navarro.”

Pony nodded, considering what the FBI director had to say. “And Piper?”

“Agent Marino is going to be assigned to a joint DEA-FBI anti-narcoterrorism task force.”

“That’s a lot of words.”

“We’re hoping she can act as a liaison with your… organization of motorcycle enthusiasts.”

Pony nodded again with a smirk, now that he understand exactly what was being pitched to him. “You’re looking for someone to walk both sides of the line.”

“That’s exactly right,” the DEA agent cut in. “Navarro and the cartel aren’t going to quit. They’re going to keep trying to push their way into your territory.”

“We can handle Navarro.”

“No doubt. But you’re a military man. You understand the value of having allies when it comes to a conflict. We can bringa lot of assets to bear on the situation. We can trade intel, even provide a little muscle in certain situations.”

“And you would use the MC as muscle in those other situations,” Pony said. “The ones where you can’t legally move against the cartel.”

“Which you would be doing anyway,” Kendrick said. “Now, you’d just have more weight backing you up.”

“And Piper would be the go-between?” Pony said.

“She would have to maintain a close working relationship with you and your club,” Kendrick said.

Pony looked at her, traces of a smile pulling at the edges of his mouth.

“I think we can handle that,” he said.

“Excellent,” Kendrick said, standing up and collecting the files in front of him. “We’ll leave you two to… discuss the details.”

With that, he led the other federal agents out of the room, including the two guarding the door. On his way out, Winston said to Piper, “Good to have you aboard, Marino.”

Piper nodded and kept her mouth shut, waiting until everyone left the room. It was only after the door clicked shut and she and Pony were alone in the meeting room that she broke her stiff posture and spoke.

“Holy shit,” she said, grabbing on to Pony’s arm.

“Yeah.”

“Did that just happen?”

“Apparently.”
