Piper shook her head. “My Krav Maga instructor.”

Pony looked at her. “I have so many things to learn about you, clearly.”

“You have no idea,” she said with a smile.

The second she said it, she thought, ease back on the flirtation, Piper. Don’t get too close. Remember at some point you’re going to have to flip him. Make him turn on the MC.

Even if I don’t want to?she asked herself.

That’s the job. That’s what you signed up for. Remember?

Like before, when she was looking at her Tuesday Outfit in the closet, Piper told herself she had to push away all those thoughts. She was in this to take down a violent drug cartel threatening to encroach on this small Pennsylvania town, and to get Carly free and clear of the nonsense charges against her.

This was bigger than her, bigger than any feelings she might be having for Pony, even if it did feel like they were two of a kind. Even if he did seem like exactly the right guy for her.

She couldn’t think about any of that. Right now, she had to go all the way in with her cover and try to win this race.

The other riders began to move their bikes into position on the road, pulling Piper out of her thoughts. She, too, fell in to the group and walked her motorcycle out onto the road. Pony did the same, settling in next to her.

The guy with the handlebar moustache stepped in front of the gathered bikes, waving his hand in the air to get everyone’s attention.

“All right, you new people, listen up,” he said. “It’s a straight forward race. I drop the flag, you haul ass. First one back here to this telephone pole with the orange ribbon tied around it, is the winner.”

“Yeah, no shit,” the tall tweaker said. “Let’s get on with this, man.”

“Take it easy,” the race organizer said. “Like I said, we’ve got some new people here.”

“Fuckin’ new people,” the tweaker grumbled, loudly enough to be heard by the rest of the racers.

“What’s the route?” Piper asked.

“Don’t worry,” the organizer said. “You can’t get lost. This road starts off straight, then winds up and twists like a bitch all the way up the mountain. When you see the old stone farmhouse near the top, you bear left. That will take you right back down here to the finish line.”

“Seems simple enough,” Piper said.

“Yeah, well, don’t get too cocky,” the organizer said. “I’m not kidding when I say it twists and turns like a bitch all the way up and down again. You take your eye off the ball for one second on this road, and it’s lights out.”

“Put a nasty fucking scar on that pretty little face of yours,” Black Tooth said, glaring at her. “Make you all kinds of ugly.”

“Is that what happened to you?” Piper said.

Black Tooth looked like he wanted to respond, but the race organizer was already talking.

“You two are new here, so you have to start in the back,” the organizer said. “Until we can see what you can do.”

“Don’t worry, honey,” Black Tooth said, now that he had a chance to speak. “I’ll wait at the end to wipe away your tears. If you finish.”

“That’s probably what your girlfriend says every time you get into bed with her,” Piper said. “Wait, what am I saying? There’s no way you have a girlfriend.”

“Mouthy bitch,” Black Tooth said. “We’ll see.”

“All right, people,” the race organizer said. “Anyone who’s racing, line up. If you aren’t racing, get the hell off the road. Let’s do this.”

After she and Pony walked their bikes to the back of the group of street racers, she looked them over one last time before the race began. Other than her and Pony, there were the charming trio of meth heads, and five other racers past that. In total, that made eight people in front of them.

Funny how she was already thinking of her and Pony as “them”, as a team. It seemed natural to think that way, even though there wasn’t any rules about racing as a team. There didn’t seem to be much in the way of rules at all, in fact.

If nothing else, this was about to get interesting.
