Wyatt shrugged. “We’ll just have to catch Mr. Slippery another day.”

Pony stared down the road, in the direction the mystery rider had disappeared. Devil had Black Tooth in hand back at the gas station. Which of the other two bank robbers had he and Wyatt been chasing?

Not the tall one, he thought.Too short for that.Although, it was hard to tell exactly how tall a person was when they were sitting on a bike.

The shorter one, then, maybe? Pony tried to think back to the night before. The rider he’d just been chasing seemed too thin to fit the description, but maybe he was just fooling himself.

It didn’t matter. Wyatt was right. Whoever their mystery rider was, they were long gone. All they could do was re-group and hope to catch the speedster another day.

By the time Piper got home, it was getting dark out.

She’d had to make sure that she really had lost Pony and Wyatt, driving far off into the back country before looping around to recover Carly’s Jetta.

That was the really scary part. It was possible that Pony had spotted her car, realized it wasn’t there before, and sat on it, watching and waiting to see who showed up to claim it. And if he had done that, there was no story in the world that could’ve explained why she was there.

Luckily, though, nobody was watching the spot on the side of the road where she’d left Carly’s car. Once she’d ditched the bank robber’s bike in the bushes nearby, along with their jacket and helmet, she practically sprinted her way to the Jetta and turned the key.

For a split second, she had a nightmare in which the car didn’t start, but sure enough, the old reliable girl kicked in and Piper was able to ease out onto the road and make her getaway.

It was only after she’d driven several miles away that she felt her nerves begin to ease down. Not entirely; the adrenaline from the shootout at the cabin, followed by her chase after Black Tooth and then the race away from Pony and Wyatt probably wouldn’t fade any time soon.

Talk about a shock to the system. Speeding off after Black Tooth, fully committed into Pursuit Mode, and then, she’d seenPony plain as day, standing out in the parking lot of the gas station with a sawed off shotgun in his hands.

Her brain had popped. She’d done the only thing she could do, which was come to a complete stop until she could figure out what to do. Only after a moment or two had she realized that with the jacket and helmet on, Pony and the other MC brothers would have no idea who she was. All she needed to do, was get away.

Which, of course, had been easier said than done. The traffic snarl where the telephone pole repair work was being done had nearly been her downfall. But once she was through the stopped cars, every nerve cell going off on blast, she realized she would have enough of a lead to escape.

In the time it took to replay the day’s events in her head, she was home. Piper shut down the engine, sitting in the car for a few seconds, staring at the steering wheel dully. This morning had started off as dull as any other, and then, the world had blown up into chaos. It almost didn’t seem real.

Carly must’ve seen it on her as she stumbled through the front door, because it took all of a half a second before the questions started coming Piper’s way.

“Piper? Are you okay?” Carly said.

“Yeah,” Piper said. “Yeah, fine.”

“You’re wearing a bulletproof vest.”

“It’s fine, Carly.”

“There’s a bullet, in your bulletproof vest.”

“Oh,” Piper said, looking down at the metallic lump jutting out of her Kevlar vest. “Yeah. That.”

“Piper.”

“It’s nothing.”

“It is definitely not nothing, it’s a bullet,” Carly said. “A bullet isn’t nothing. You got shot.”

“Well, yes, technically.”

“Technically? You mean literally.”

“Look, I don’t want you to worry.”

“Of course I’m worried, Piper, you’re my sister and you got shot!”
