Once again, Wyatt seemed to be speaking for all of the brothers when he said, “Thatfucking guy.”

“Yeah, that fucking guy,” she said. “My orders were to infiltrate this MC, keep my eyes and ears open, and look for signs of cartel activity or any similar connection to Navarro.”

“Well, that doesn’t make sense,” Devil said. “We don’t have anything do with that Navarro guy.”

Piper said, “You did blow up four members of the Warlords MC with C4 that we traced back to the cartels.”

“Technically,” Devil said, holding up a finger, “Navarro blew them up. It’s a long story.”

“Still. You leave a crater in the highway made by plastic explosives and filled with bits of machine guns and illegal drugs and rival gang members, you’re going to draw some federal level attention.”

Pony gave Devil a little punch on the arm. “Told you.”

Devil went to open his mouth to retort, but Boomer stepped in before Devil could derail the entire line of conversation.

“What I’m hearing so far,” he said, “is that you were recruited by Harris to investigate our MC because there was some belief that we were connected to Navarro and his cartel due to the truck explosion. Is that right?”

“That’s how it started,” Piper said. “But after I was here for a while, it started to become clear that your MC wasn’t involved with the cartel, or anything else the FBI would care about, for that matter.”

“So why did Harris show up and try to turn our clubhouse upside down?” Griz asked. “I almost punched that asshole in the face.”

Pony said, “This is the important part. Why I brought her here.”

“Harris…” Piper said, clearly searching for the right words, “hasn’t exactly been straight with me.”

Jocko let out a snort. “No shit?”

“Jocko,” Boomer said. “Let her talk.”

“I kept telling him that the MC was clean, and he kept insisting that there had to be something here. It got… weird. Like he couldn’t see things clearly. Finally, he tried to extort me into planting evidence.”

“Heroin,” Pony said. “A kilo of it.”

Wyatt said, “That’s enough for a federal level interest.”

“Exactly. He said he wanted to use it to squeeze one of you into giving up Navarro. But that was never his intention.”

Boomer asked, “What was?”

“Taking out the MC,” Piper said.

“Why does this guy Harris have such a hard on for our club?” Griz said.

Pony answered for her. “Because he’s working for Navarro.”

More groans and grumbles around the table, as Griz said, “What?”

“It’s true,” Piper said, raising her voice a bit to be heard over the grumbling. “He tried to have me killed tonight. Set me up to meet someplace out in the open, distracted me long enough for two shooters to come up on me. Cartel shooters.”

“Pony?” Boomer asked.

“It’s true,” Pony said, pointing to the side of his neck. “One of the guys had a cartel tattoo here.”

“Wait, so the bad guy pretends to be fighting Navarro,” Devil said, “when the entire time, he’s really working for Navarro? That’s pretty diabolical. That’s like something the Joker would do.”

“Devil.”

“No, I’m just saying. That’s some Batman villain shit right there.”
