“You’ve come on behalf of the investors, correct?” Menni prompted him. “Can you tell us a little about yourself and your experience.”

He looked straight at Dafna and spoke to her.

“Good to meet you all. I’m Erez Ben Ami. I’m a CPA working in G&L. We are the largest accounting firm in Israel, and I’ve been working in the Real Estate Audit department for the past six years and have been a team leader there for the last two.”

“An accountant?” Dafna asked.

“Are you married?” That was Nurit.

“Children?” Daniel smiled.

“I have a daughter. She is thirteen years old. Her name is Gal.”

“Lovely,” Menni cooed. “My first son, Oren, is ten months old.”

“Do you have any questions?” Gil asked. Erez shook his head. He’d made up his mind. He would just have to explain to his boss, somehow, why he was walking away from this gig.

“I’m sorry. But after hearing about your company, I’m afraid I’m the wrong man to do you justice. I come from real estate, and you need someone more tech savvy.”

Everyone in the room, except for Dafna, looked stricken.

“But…Motti knew about your background,” Menni stuttered. “He is the investor asking for the due diligence and he was okay with it.”

“Please,” said Daniel, “we have to have this due diligence done in the next month. We won’t find someone else.”

“I understand, but I’m afraid my answer is final. Your investor will have to find another man. He’s friends with my boss. There are plenty of accountants in our firm. G&L also has a consultancy, Tractus, that deals with high-tech companies. Perhaps someone from there.”

Erez stood up decisively. He knew he was giving up on his dream job, right here and now. It hurt, but the right decisions were rarely easy to make. A tiny, insistent voice in his head was cheering – this kept him away from Dafna now, but it left an opening for a future re-joining.

“Lovely to meet you all, but I’m sorry I can’t be of more help.”

He nodded his head at Dafna and left the room.

Chapter 11

Go Get Him Back!

Erez walked out, and the trio left as well.

Dafna remained sitting, her heart racing, unable to move. He looked so different, dressed in his accountant’s work clothes, that for a moment she doubted her eyes. But this mouth, those long-lashed green eyes, the deep voice. Erez the accountant and Erez the barman were one and the same.

These past ten days, the magical night with the tattooed condom-box-emptier had receded to the back of her mind, acquiring a dreamlike quality, sometimes she’d wonder if it really happened. But it did. She did take a strange man into her bed. She thought she didn’t have it in her anymore, that she couldn’t make a man happy. Erez had convinced her otherwise. Meeting Kelly, Ilan’s new love interest, so young and beautiful, drove her mind in new directions. She fantasized maybe she could reach out for Erez and try for more.

So much for that fantasy.

“That was the Erez, right? Erez isn’t such a common name. Plus, gorgeous with green eyes? And the way you guys froze…”

“Yes, that was Erez,” she whispered. There was no use denying it.

“Why do you think he left?” Nurit demanded, her dark eyes angry.

“I guess…because of what happened between us?” There was half a question mark in her voice.

“Yes because of what happened! He was staring straight at you when he said he couldn’t review us!”

“Of course. He shouldn’t. It’s a conflict of interest.” This should be clear to Nurit. Erez walking left a small window of hope. A shiny nugget of a possibility.

“You need to get him back,” Nurit said. Her mouth straightened into a thin, determined line. “It would be your fault if we don’t get the investment.”
