Erez stood at her office’s door. His black hair was freshly cropped, the light green button-down neatly buttoned, his black pants creased. His figure filled her doorway, his hair almost touched the lintel.

“Hi,” Zoey said breathlessly, their large boobs still resting on Dafna’s shoulder.

“Hi. I’m sorry I’m late. My daughter…” He tucked his hands in his pockets and shrugged those broad, broad shoulders. “Never mind.”

“Erez, meet Zoey. They are a software engineer. Zoey, meet Erez. He’s a CPA who is here to do our due diligence.”

“Hi, Erez,” Zoey said brightly and instead of leaving, sat back in the visitor chair. “Eh, Dafna,” they said, openly ogling Erez, “remember you asked me about ideas for our next company fun day out?”

Her deal with Nurit put her on a tight budget. She’d spoken to several employees she trusted and were great people’s persons, Zoey being one of them, asking for ideas.

“I checked with people. No one wants an escape room, or a cooking class, or paint guns.” Zoey counted on their fingers. “Everyone really likes the idea of kayaks on the Jordan river!”

Dafna shook her head.

“We’re looking for an afternoon, not a whole day, and we need something around Tel Aviv. How about kayaking on the Yarkon?”

“Three-year-olds kayak on the Yarkon.” Zoey huffed.

“That’s not true,” Erez intervened from the door, causing Zoey to turn towards him, their boobs stretching the tight T-shirt suggestively. “I was in Tel Aviv’s sea scout troop and kayaked on the Yarkon, but we usually did it in winter. In the summer it’s impossible to do it—there’s no shade, it will be way too hot.”

“Right.” Zoey smiled. They still didn’t go away, and Dafna really wanted them to. A green monster was starting to crawl in her insides, growing by the minute.

“What about a whisky distillery?” Erez talked directly to her. “I accompanied my brother the other day, because this whisky distillery in Jaffa was doing open day for barmen. They do whisky tasting plus food for workplaces. It’s a charming place, Dafna.”

“Are you a barman as well as a CPA?” Zoey asked. They hugged one knee with their palms and see-sawed back and forth on the chair.

“I used to be one,” he told Zoey, slanting a look at her. “I spent time in Australia, took a bartending course, and worked there.”

“That distillery sounds great. Let’s go together to check it out.” Zoey batted their eyes at Erez. The thirty-year-old Zoey was a much more sensible match for Erez. He wasn’t hers. The tightening of her throat, the irritated squeezing in her belly was uncalled for. She had no claim on him.

“Zoey, I suggest you go see your new office.” She cleared her throat, to get rid of the shrillness. “Go past R&D, take a small turn left, and you’ll see it. You can already start working there today. Now go check it, so I can tell Nurit you approve.”

Zoey peeled away from the chair ever so slowly. They were tall and shapely, with large boobs and a round ass. Erez stepped in to make room, and Zoey passed very close to him.

“See you later,” they huffed at Erez, smiling at him suggestively. He smiled back, and Zoey hopped away. He took the vacant seat, crossed his long legs, and smoothed his pants.

He was unfazed, unapologetic, utterly confident. Just like her ex. Very irritating. It was a little scary that she was attracted to the same type.

“Please don’t be late anymore. We said eight thirty.”

She schooled her voice to sound neutral. There was no reason why she would be so angry that he was an hour late, or to envy the way he smiled at Zoey.

“I know. I’m sorry about that. My daughter spent the night, forgot her mother’s house keys, and we had to drive back and get them. There is this big event tomorrow, a recital, and Gal is very nervous about it. Anyway, let’s start over. As friends. Can we do that?”

“Of course! We have a job to do. I was appointed as your liaison to assist you with everything you need for your due diligence process. How long do you think it will take? Not long, I hope.”

He winced at this. She didn’t mean to be hostile, letting her emotions get the better of her.

“I’m not sure, I haven’t done this before, and I can only spend a few hours at a time here, since I still have my to take care of my day job at G&L.”

“Right.” It would be good for both of them to get out of her small office. “I’ll give you a tour of the company and introduce you.”

She stood up, grabbed her jacket from the back of her chair, and put it on. Outside her office, the air-conditioned building’s temperatures could reach Siberia levels. He stood as well and took a step back to allow her to pass him.

The top of her head reached just under his chin, and there was a slight brush of her hair, that barely registered and yet made her shiver. She turned sharply and looked up at him. The bottle green eyes were serious as he stared back.

“I understand, Dafna, don’t worry,” he said quietly. “I’ll be out of your hair in no time.”
