He turned to her, no longer able to resist her pull, letting one foot touch the floor.

“Yes!” She leaned towards him in her eagerness, practically sitting between his legs. “This morning I got a request to bring dogs to work. And I’m ashamed of myself for not thinking of it earlier. Dog owners need to find a place for them while they are at work. It would be super helpful to let them bring their dogs to the office. I’ll talk to the building’s management and see how I can arrange for it.”

“And afterwards, what are you going to work on?” He met her arched brows and shrugged.

“Sorry, it’s not part of the due diligence. You don’t have to answer. It’s just that at G&L I’ve met the HR maybe twice during my years there. They work behind the scenes, mostly. I’m curious.”

“I attended a seminar on inclusivity in the workplace.” She had a large rectangular diamond ring on her middle finger. It threw light when she moved her hand. “I’m looking at strategies to support the hybrid worker. Especially parents, and single parents most of all.”

It was a subject close to his heart.

“I’m a single dad. I mean, I’m divorced, but I have shared custody. And it was a struggle, I can tell you, when Gal was younger. I wish my industry wasn’t so old-fashioned.”

She shook her head. He had to stop himself from reaching and tucking back a wayward chestnut curl.

“Oh, it won’t be clear sailing here either. I’ll need to deploy specialized tactics to convince the other management members to go for it.”

“You’ll make it happen.” There was the slightest bump on her nose, which he had just noticed now.

“I think I will.” They were so close that her warm breath caressed his neck. “That's one reason I enjoy working at startups. It’s very hands-on.”

“Hi!”

He was so engrossed in their conversation that he didn’t notice Menni standing right next to them. Dafna and he pulled apart. She turned away, straightening her back, smoothing her dress down, her feet pulled together underneath her stool.

“I see you two are getting along just fine.” Menni’s tone implied Dafna and Erez talking was sleazy. His eyes jumped between them.

“Yes,” Dafna said, her cheeks burning red.

“Good, good.”

“Yes, we’ve been talking about the review,” he told Menni, wanting him to stop staring at Dafna. “I’ll start with the techy bits, work my way through marketing and sales, and leave the books to the end.”

“Great! Come see me anytime.” Menni smiled and left.

“Is he a good CEO?” he asked Dafna.

“That’s not part of your due diligence,” she said, her loyalty to Kisharti overriding their tenuous bonding, “let’s continue the tour.”

He followed her, enjoying the view. There were worse ways to spend a morning.

Chapter 14

The Uglifying Kit

“Good morning!”

Erez stood in her doorway holding two cups of coffee, looking sharp in a beige button-down and creased dark blue pants. She accompanied him yesterday, making initial introductions, instructing everyone to provide him with everything he needed. Then he had to leave for G&L, mentioning he would start his day with Gil, who was also an early starter. Daniel’s Sales department, which dealt with North American clients, usually began their day much later.

“Hi.” She smiled at him and accepted her second coffee of the morning with gratitude. Commuting here today took nearly an hour, and she got to work later than usual. He made it just as she liked it, strong and sugarless. “I love your CPA get-up, but around here you can wear jeans and a T-shirt.”

“I like your get-up,” he said, leaning forward, the open buttons in his shirt allowing for a glimpse of his chest hair. “You always dress very feminine to work. And the reason I wear this is that I need to leave here in a couple of hours and go to G&L.”

He was perceptive. She loved dresses, and this morning she paid extra attention to what she wore because of him. She’d browsed her walk-in closet for a long time before choosing this gray designer dress that worked well with her chestnut hair and gray-brown eyes.

“When I was younger, interviewing for jobs, it was usually by men. One of them told me, you’re too pretty, you’ll hurt productivity, I can’t have you around.”

“Someone actually said that to you?”
