“Yes.”

“Can I ask you if you know anything about that consultancy they have there, Tractus?”

“G&L Tractus? Yes. Why?”

Avigail’s large dark eyes had long lashes and her features were very delicate, except for her bushy eyebrows. Dafna’s tale about being considered too pretty made him wonder whether Avigail ever had to downplay her femininity.

“I’m the CEO of a startup, and the head of Tractus Consultancy is an old friend from school. We met at a convention a week ago and she asked me to come in for a meeting. I thought I’d pick your brain first.”

Avigail was going to a meeting with the very woman who would decide his future. Dafna was a genius. This could be his break, giving him an extra edge over the other contenders. Erez regarded Dafna’s friend, who regarded him back with a piercing look under her thick eyebrows. If she headed her own startup and was courted by the head of G&L Tractus, she was probably badass.

“I’m running for a position there–exactly for the team that would work with you. I’d love a word about your needs and requirements.”

The semicircular front of the large café, which dominated the intersection, was right in front of them. They stood in line, Avigail impatiently checking her oversized masculine watch every few seconds. He paid for her coffee and cheese Danish, choosing for himself a berry yogurt. They sat under a sprawling ficus because the air conditioning inside was too cold for Avigail.

“I wish I could provide my investors with an independent due diligence, like Dafna did.” She gave him an amused look, which he met with what he hoped was an innocent face. “It would go a long way to quiet their worries of what I do with their money.”

“I’m not sure Tractus has this service, but when I become team leader, I could see that we start something like that.”

“Hmmmm…independent reviewer is better. It would be perceived as being more reliable. If you know someone, tell me.”

He debated whether to trust her but figured that eventually there was nothing much to find out from his report–which for now, until he finished his checks with Dafna, held no numbers.

“Would it be helpful for you to see the report I made for Kisharti?”

She nodded, and he uploaded the PDF and handed her his phone.

“How was it?” she asked, skimming his report, her finger pausing every couple of seconds. “I mean, with Dafna?”

“I enjoyed doing it and I think it’s great practice for being hands on in my new job.”

She threw back her head and laughed. Then she got serious, wanting to know details, asking intelligent questions about the checks he’d made, and the way he went about doing his due diligence. Avigail was sharp and ambitious.

“You’ve been seeing a lot of Dafna,” she stated.

“Yes,” he answered. The test wasn’t over yet.

“You like her?” She held his eyes, daring him to tell anything but the truth.

“I like her a lot, yes,” he answered honestly, “but it’s not that simple.”

“What is?” Avigail smiled. “Well, I’ll put in a good word for you with my friend.”

“Thanks.” He held little hope that it would help, but at least he had passed.

Chapter 32

Abba Isn’t Going To Like It

She finished dressing, listening to Gal’s beautiful singing. Erez was in the shower.

For the past three weeks, ever since Erez finished his due diligence, they’d been meeting almost every night. When it was at her home and her sons were present, he sneaked into her bedroom, leaving before five am. Like two teenagers hiding from their parents, they were hiding from her children, because she wasn’t ready yet to introduce him, and he didn’t press her. Yesterday they spent the night here, at his tiny apartment, because Gal was supposed to be at her mother’s. Rona must have dropped her off this morning.

Her sons were now at the airport, leaving with Ilan for their Austrian hiking trip. This afternoon she would get a tattoo, and as a surprise treat for Erez, she’d booked the honeymoon suite in a boutique hotel at Ella valley. When her sons were back—ten days from now—she would introduce them to Erez and her tattoo would be a done deed.

She emerged from the bedroom.

“Good morning Gal! Please don’t stop singing.”
