“Motti needed a win,” Nurit said, “and Menni knew it.”

Dafna agreed. “He knew he had leverage. And I know what GTN means–Good To Know. Spelled like it sounds.”

“You got that right.” Menni was standing in the doorway, glaring at them. “You two don’t move. I’m calling building security.”

Chapter 44

You need to step down

He was so proud of Gal. Her astounding voice rose as she belted out flirtatious words in French. He was lost to everything but his daughter’s singing.

“She’s too young for this song,” a middle-aged man noted, and Erez frowned at him because he secretly agreed with this sentiment.

“She’s perfect,” he answered gruffly from behind the building’s column, where he was keeping out of Gal’s sight.

The chorus tapped their feet on the floor, as did the dancers in the crowd, mimicking flamenco dancers. Gal seemed to forget she had ever suffered stage fright. Erez held his breath as she finished the aria with a flourish. The crowd erupted into fervent applause, hooting and yelling. He clapped until his hands hurt, smiling widely, but still hiding.

“That’s my daughter,” he bragged to the man, gratified by the stranger’s awed look.

The gallery above filled up with people that were drawn to the loud cheering and clapping. Having received Daniel’s text, he looked for Daniel and Menni but couldn’t find them.

“Thank you,” Gal said, her voice strong and confident. Exercising his willpower, he stayed where he was and didn’t even peek to see her dimpled smile.

“The next number is from the opera Orpheus and Euridice. It’s called ‘The dance of the furies’ and as you can see, it involves dancing.”

Rammy’s son, Dan, brought with him four friends for the all-male routine. The choreography was Shechter’s, and they copied the British Royal Opera’s attire as well. They were all bare chested, wearing loose gray pants. The dancers filed in a line and raised their arms dramatically. An excited buzz arose. The women in the crowd pushed forward, ogling the naked male torsos. The lobby was packed, as well as the gallery. This was doing everything it needed to do.

“Hi Erez, what are you doing here?” he almost jumped out of his skin when Menni’s voice sounded.

“That’s my daughter singing.” He couldn’t stop his proud grin.

“Why are you hiding?” Menni asked. His eyes bore into him, and Erez tried to look as unassuming and unthreatening as he could. He shouldn’t have come here. He had almost scared Gal into choking. He was in Dafna’s way, as he made Menni more suspicious.

“She can’t see me. She gets nervous if she does.” He opted for the truth.

“If you’re here, will I find Dafna here as well?” Menni asked.

“We’re not joined at the hip,” Erez pointed out.

“But you’re together.”

“Are we?”

“Nurit told me,” Menni said. “She’s Dafna’s best friend, she should know.”

Fuck. He schooled his face into a mask of unconcern. He wouldn’t be fooled into admitting anything. Menni could just be fishing.

“I came here to watch, or more precisely to listen, to my daughter,” he repeated.

“For real?” That was Zoey. “That’s your daughter? Who are the guys?”

“Friends, would you like an introduction later?”

“You bet!”

“Shhhh!”

A few more Kisharti employees joined them. The dance ended and everyone clapped. “Your daughter is so talented,” Zoey nudged him playfully.
