“Great.” Dex beams. “Also, apart from seeing my best mate happily with you, I have selfish reasons for wanting Cam to take my job.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Meryl and I need reliable babysitters! And, also, it’ll be nice to have Cam living closer so we can hang out and do bro stuff, when Meryl lets me.”

I’m laughing. I’m so happy I think I’m going to burst. I don’t know what to say.

“Dex. You’re a gem. Keep me in the loop. I’ll see you soon.”

“Thank you, Reverand. I think you will particularly enjoy the Sophie Kinsella, Confessions of a Shopaholic.” I hand over the stack of romantic comedies to the smiling cleric.

“Ah yes. Shopaholism: a terrible scourge on modern society. I will be forewarned and forearmed by this book, I’m sure, to know what to say when the shopaholics of Oak River come to me for confession. Thank you, Molly. You’ve been so very helpful.”

Reverand Manvers leaves me alone in the library. He is the last customer. Kevin left early. He had an appointment. All I need to do before I go is lock the office door and turn out the lights. I sweep a cursory gaze along the shelves. Everything looks tidy. I walk over to the Romance section to replace the returns brought in by the Rev. Three sweet romances. The covers are bright candy colors with simple illustrated characters and titles in swirling large script. Here’s one about a firefighter. It looks like fun. I think I’ll take it home with me to read tonight.

To my dismay, someone comes in. I sigh audibly. I wasn’t quick enough. I should have locked the door. This always happens. Just as I’m about to close for the day, someone decides that they urgently need a book and can’t wait until tomorrow. I arrange my face to mask my annoyance.

Without looking up from the shelf I say, “Hi there. I’ll be closing up in two minutes.”

“Hey, Molly.”

I gasp. I know that voice. It’s Cam. I slowly stand up using the shelf to steady myself.

“Cam?”

He’s at the end of the Romance aisle looking every bit as handsome as I remember. He’s not in his firefighter uniform, but wearing smart black jeans, a dark shirt, and a tailored jacket. He walks slowly toward me.

“I hope this isn’t a bad time.”

“No. Not at all. How can I help? Are you looking for something in particular?”

“Well, yes. And no.”

I look at the books surrounding me with titles such as Hot Flames of Passion, and The Duke of Desire, and Take Me, I’m Yours. I know I’m blushing but there’s not much I can do about it.

“Alright.” A nervous laugh spills out as I face Cam surrounded by love stories. Try to behave like a normal person, I tell myself. I take a breath. “Then, can you give me some more information? Something from the historic archive, perhaps?”

“I don’t think what I’m looking for is in a book.”

Cam takes another step forward but seems hesitant.

“Well, it’s nice to see you again. And umm, what brings you back to lil’ ol’ Oak River?”

“You Molly. I came back for you.”

I stare at the tall and gorgeous firefighter, standing in the Romance aisle with me.

“For me?”

“Yes.” Cam and I face each other for a moment, then he continues. “Do you remember when we met? That night we gave you a ride home in the firetruck?”

“How could I forget?” I laugh as I remember. “Yes.”

“And when we were looking around the yard at number four, I said that I didn’t know what it meant to want a home; to feel like I belong.” Cam takes a step closer to me. “I know what it means now.” He reaches for my hands and gently holds them in his. “You are my home, Molly. I belong with you.” I’m stunned. I’m breathless. Cam leans his head down. His lips lightly brush my cheek. “You light me up. You must know. Molly, I…”

The library door opens, and a faceless voice shouts out hopefully, “Are you still open?”
