Out of the corner of my eye, I see our cousin Wren approaching. She looks like she means business, and I’m glad for it.

“Excuse me. Excuse me!” she repeats when everyone ignores her. “This is a lodge where people come to rest and relax, and this man here is clearly injured. Give him some space, for god’s sake!” She then turns to the photographers. “And you guys don’t have permission to organize a photoshoot on these premises, so if I were you, I’d get out of here before the cops arrive.”

“Did you really call the cops?” I whisper.

“Not yet,” she says, “but they don’t know that, do they?”

They angrily pack their stuff and try to argue with Wren, but my cousin is a force of nature. No one messes with her.

A few fans stay put, clearly not intending to budge any time soon.

“Uhm, everyone?” I call out to them. “I’ll have an hour to do a meet and greet tomorrow, but right now, I need to rest.”

“There will be a sign-up sheet for the meet and greet at the check-in desk in an hour,” Wren says.

She’s quick on her feet, always thinking one step ahead.

“Thanks, Wren,” I tell her.

“No problem, cousin.” She arches an eyebrow. “What the hell happened to you anyway?”

Brody shrugs. “What do you think? Went snowboarding where he wasn’t allowed and hit a patch of ice.”

She winces. “Ouch. That’s bad.”

“I know. It sucks. The worst thing is that I still have to call my coach and explain what happened. He’s not going to like it, but I can’t avoid him. He needs to hear it from me before he sees it on the news.”

“Well, if you need anything, just let me know, okay? I’m sorry, but I’ve got to get back to work for now.”

I nod. “Thanks.”

“Let’s get you up to your room, brother,” Brody says, helping me to the elevator.

Once I’m alone in my room, my thoughts immediately veer toward Holly again. Seeing her at the hospital earlier stirred something inside me that I had buried deep down years ago. I assumed that if I didn’t think about her anymore and focused on my career, the crush I once had on her would disappear.

I snort. Man, I was wrong. I’m still head over heels for her.

A pang of hurt hits me as I realize that she doesn’t feel the same way about me. What’s worse is that it’s all my fault. I could’ve been with her but fucked things up big time, and I don’t know how to make things right.

Chapter Four

Holly

“Why would we go to a different bar? What’s wrong with the one we always go to?” I ask Pauline as I put my coat on.

“Variety is the spice of life, Holly. Come on, please,” she says with a pouting lip.

I frown. “Variety? Is that the true reason? I feel like you’re not telling me everything.”

“Fine.” She grins. “I heard that famous hockey player might be there.”

I pull a face. “Flynn McAllister?”

“Of course not. I remember what you told me about him. I wouldn’t want to get you into an awkward situation. I mean Jax Whalen. He’s married to Flynn’s cousin.”

I laugh. “How do you even know all of that?”

She shrugs. “I read.”
