I jump from my seat as I hear a car approach, wincing at the impact on my ankle. It’s nearly healed but still tender. I look out the window and see that it’s Holly, so I go to the front door to wait for her.

She slams her car door shut and I can’t help but inhale sharply. She still looks as amazing as she did back in high school, with luscious curves and cute glasses. Tonight, she looks even better than usual. I don’t know what it is that makes her extra attractive today. The look of determination on her face, maybe? It seems like she’s about to make me squirm, and I’m glad, because I deserve it all.

“Flynn,” she says as she steps onto the porch.

“Hey, Holly. Come in,” I say, holding the door open for her.

She takes her scarf and coat off and looks around Caleb’s cabin. “Nice place.”

“Yeah, my brother has great taste when it comes to interior design.”

She hangs her stuff over the back of a chair and leans against the dining room table. “So… You wanted to tell me something?”

“I do. Let’s sit,” I say, motioning toward the couch.

She crosses her arms over her chest. “I’m good right here.”

“Oh, okay. At least let me offer you a drink.”

“I had a glass of water before I came over,” she says.

I don’t know if she’s mocking me or not. Her eyes spit fire, though. She means business. My ankle is starting to ache, but I’m not going to be a pussy about this. I can manage standing up for a bit.

I clear my throat. “Okay, so, Holly.”

“Yes?”

“I was a jerk to you back in high school.”

A surprised look crosses her face, only for a second.

“I should’ve taken you to prom like I promised. Like I intended to. Because I wanted to, believe me.”

“Sure,” she says with a scoff. “You want me to believe those lies? You used me, Flynn, and the worst thing is that I fell for it. You got your grades and your scholarship; I got my heart broken.”

Fuck, seeing the hurt in her eyes is like a punch in the chest. “Holly, I mean it.”

“Then why did you stand me up? I waited for over an hour for you. An hour!”

“You’re right, I was an asshole. There’s no excuse for what I did. I realized you might not believe me, so that’s why I brought this.”

I pull a crumpled piece of paper from my pocket and hand it to her.

“If you ever tell anyone about this, I’ll have to kill you, though,” I joke.

She snatches the paper from my hand, and I watch as all kinds of emotions cross her face.

“Is this real?”

“It is. See? I wrote it on the back of a trigonometry practice test you gave me.”

On the paper she’s holding, I did the most girlie thing a guy could ever resort to. I drew a heart with my black Sharpie and wrote our names on it, with a Cupid’s arrow and everything.

“I fell for you back then, Holly. Fast and hard. But I chickened out. I thought you were out of my league. I mean, why would a girl like you want to date a jock like me who didn’t even understand basic math principles? So, yeah, I took the girl I was expected to take. It was the coward’s way out, I know.”

She shakes her head. “You thought I was out of your league? I thought the same thing, Flynn. You were the hottest guy in the entire school, and I knew you. Really knew you. You were determined to get good grades. You had ambition. You were kind. Or at least you were, until—”

“I know,” I say, cutting her off. “I treated you badly. I never should’ve stood you up. I should’ve listened to my heart and went with you. Danced with you. Kissed you.”
