Ash picked up his fork but continued to stare at the view, deep in thought. In a couple days, the women would arrive and then his time would be spent learning about his client and taking care of her…in all ways.

His last woman had issues with shame surrounding sex. It had been deeply ingrained in her, but he prided himself on the fact that she’d walked out to board the float plane back to the mainland with a bounce in her step.

He also knew he’d sent her home with more than a few beard burns on her body and some hickeys as a reminder of her time with him.

Piers picked up his own fork, probed the ziti pasta and then set it down again.

Ash met his gaze. “I can see something’s weighing on you.”

“It’s the whole situation with Avril. I don’t like that she didn’t have anybody to fight for her. Lots of the guys sleep with each other and with non-Boot Knocker employees on the ranch.Hell, I walked in on Steel plowing Maggie in the barn just yesterday.”

He cocked a brow. “Maggie? I thought she steered clear of Boot Knockers.”

“You know how popular Steel is. With the ladies and men.”

Ash did. His fellow Boot Knocker had flashed those gray eyes Ash’s way more than once, but he never jumped at the chance. Piers was more than enough for him.

Piers switched the topic back to Avril. “She could use a friend or…counsel. She shouldn’t be put in the spotlight for her personal choices. It’s only a rumor that the baby belongs to a Boot Knocker.”

Their gazes clashed.

“Counsel,” Ash repeated slowly.

“Sylvee.”

Just hearing Piers say her name sent prickles up the back of Ash’s neck.

“We have to call her. She’s a lawyer—she’ll know what to do.”

Piers’s lips tightened. “Maybe not. She can’t practice law in Alaska.”

“Yeah, but she could give us tips about how this works.”

Those firm, sexy lips tipped up at the corner. “Seriously, dude, you just want an excuse to call her.”

No point in Ash denying it. “I never got over her. You crushed on her too. But really, we need legal advice, and she is discreet.”

“Will Charlie like us calling her?” Piers tapped the fork against the side of his plate. Ash knew his lover’s knee would be bouncing under the table.

“He’s always been suspicious of us, even on their wedding day, and we were standing right beside him.”

“I think he was waiting for one of us to stop the wedding.”

Ash grunted and pulled out his phone. “I don’t care what Charlie thinks. She’s our friend.”

Piers glanced around. “The hall’s cleared out now. Put her on speaker.”

Just locating Sylvee’s contact, seeing that tiny photo of her smiling for them when he snapped the picture, made his chest tight. When he dialed, he held his breath.

His mind whirled with memories of Sylvee. From the beginning of time, Ash, Piers and Charlie had been the three musketeers. Then they stood up against those bullies for Sylvee and after that, she was part of their group.

Part of them.

Only Charlie got lucky and put a ring on her finger.

“This is Sylvee Young.”

He fumbled with the phone to put it on speaker. Holding Piers’s gaze, he found his voice. “Sylvee. It’s Ash.”
