“Okay, you’ll stay?”

“Okay, I’ll sleep on it,” I answer.

“Excellent,” he replies, ready to move on. But I have questions.

“How would it work, though?”

“Well,” he says, feigning utter seriousness, “you lie down. You put your head on the pillow …”

I smack him on his thigh. “I’m being serious.”

“What do you mean, how would it work? The kitchen is fully stocked—in case you get sick of room service. The bathroom should have everything you need. I give you the key card. You come and go as you please.”

“And you’ll be …?”

“I’ll be at work.”

“But you’ll … visit?”

His eyebrows arch suggestively. “Only if you want me to.”

“But I mean, you won’t stay here? Live here?”

“I have my own place.”

“So you’ll be keeping me here for a few days … like a … pet?”

“Ooh,” he says, voice dropping an octave. “I like the sound of that.”

The Billionaire’s Pet. That’s one romance novel title I never saw coming.

“As much as I fucking love the idea of you being my pet,” Alistair replies, “I don’t think it would last. Soon your intelligence and independence would emerge and ruin everything.”

I smack him again.

“More like a secret mistress, then,” I suggest.

“That’s more like it. I like the sound of that even more. I’ve always wanted a secret mistress.”

“No, you haven’t,” I say.

“No, I haven’t. You’re right. But I do now.”

“Okay,” I say, without thinking too much. If I think too much about it, the answer will be no. And despite my misgivings and the possible consequences, I want the answer to be yes.

“Okay, you’ll be my secret mistress?” he says, checking we’re on the same page.

“Yes, Alistair,” I say. “I’ll be your secret mistress.”

He grins.

“But only for a few nights,” I caution. “Just until I realize what a colossal mistake I’ve made.”

“Deal,” he says, stroking me. “Pet.”

We watch a movie together, but I can’t focus on the storyline because I’m doing my best not to grin from ear to ear like the village idiot who scored a free lunch. I get to stay in this palace for a few more days. More importantly, I’ll get to have sex with Alistair again, which gives me a tingling feeling all the way up my body. I can’t believe my luck.

It’s not all good vibes, though. Part of the thrill is the danger, because as naïve as I’m pretending to be, I know this could get very complicated, very quickly.
