“Fucking everything,” she demands. “And don’t leave anything out.”

My cheeks burn. “For the sake of our friendship, I will be leaving some things out.”

“Fine,” she replies, putting on a sultry voice. “Leave the rest to my imagination.”

We chink glasses and taste our drinks. Lemongrass, green tea, sake.

I feel light and happy. I love being out with Becks, and it’s so great to try somewhere new. “I’ll tell you the most exciting thing.”

“Sold.”

“We came to an … agreement last night. At dinner.”

“I’m listening.”

I gulp down my embarrassment. We are best friends, after all. Becks knows me better than I know myself. “So, basically … he’s going to help me find what does it for me.”

“What turns you on?”

I nod and take a long drink of the crushed-ice cocktail. It’s starting to taste more potent.

“Well,” she muses, “that sounds positive. Most men I meet don’t give a rat’s arse about what I like in bed.”

“Same,” I reply. “Well, until now.”

“Most are just jackhammers on autopilot, if I’m being honest. And then after two minutes of that they’re like, did you come? And I’m, like, no, you twat, of course I didn’t come. Fucking idiots, the lot of them. They’re like puppies, really. You need to train them.”

Except Alistair, I think.

Becks reads my mind. “Except your man, from the sounds of it.”

“Honestly, Becks. I have never. Never ever in my life, ever, had sex like this.”

“Oh my god!” she exclaims. “Now you really do have to tell me everything.”

I look at the entrance, to make sure Henderson isn’t within earshot. The restaurant is busy, so I assume we’re fine.

“It’s just like he knows exactly how a woman’s body works, you know? He knows what to do. He knows my body much better than I do, which is pretty tragic if you think about it. I’ve had twenty-eight years to figure out what feels good and I’m none the wiser.”

“Until now,” says Becks.

I widen my eyes at her in ardent agreement. “Until now.”

“It’s not like I haven’t been telling you,” says Becks.

“I know! You were right.”

Even as teens, Becks was telling me I needed to explore my own body.

If you don’t know what feels good, how do you expect a man to?

But now, seemingly out of thin air, there’s man that knows exactly what to do. A man that’s teaching me about the deep and abiding pleasure that can be had.

“So, you found a man that is not a jackhammering automaton. Congratulations. I can tell you they are few and far between. That is no small victory.”

We chink glasses again.

“How long will you stay with him?”
