“You were a virgin?” he asks, his tone suddenly horrified as he freezes with his pants halfway back up his thighs.

I laugh. “No. Sorry. Not what I meant. Though it’s been awhile since the last time.”

His shoulders relax visibly, and he finishes closing his pants as I prop myself up on my elbows.

“I meant that was the first time I’ve had sex outside—and the first time I’ve come more than once. But would it be so hard to believe if I were a virgin?” Immediately, my thoughts go back to the comment he made in my brother’s kitchen. Does he think I’m a slut for sleeping with him?

The possibility offends me deeply.

“No—no, it’s not that,” he says, his slight Russian accent seeming to grow thicker as he gets what I can only describe as flustered. It’s the first time I’ve seen him off balance, and it’s surprisingly endearing.

Clearing his throat uncomfortably, Mishka reaches for the bloodstained tie that he’d used as a temporary bandage for my head. I feel bad for ruining the beautiful fabric even if I was unconscious when he did it.

Using the still-clean wide end of the tie, he wipes the cum from my belly in a show of consideration I hadn’t anticipated. As he cleans me up, his eyes flick up to meet mine. “I just thought… well, if it were… I mean, I would have tried to be more…”

“More what?” I ask, a smile curving my lips as he grows more adorable by the second.

“Well, gentle, I guess?” It comes out as a question.

Sitting up, I press a kiss to his cheek. “You’re sweet.” Pulling my dress back up over my body, I start to straighten myself out.

He chuckles, the sound low and inviting as he scans the ground. “I think you might be the first person who’s ever accused me of being sweet.”

Laughing, I accept my panties that he finds and returns to me. Then I slip them back on and pull my dress down. Mishka shrugs back into his shirt before closing it.

“You really should get some sleep,” he says after we’re both put back together.

I nod, feeling suddenly shy as I think about curling back up on the cold ground when I would desperately like to snuggle with him. The hint of a smile curls one side of his mouth, and he settles onto the ground, leaning against the cave’s curving wall before pulling me close.

Heart swelling, I smile as I press my ear against his chest and settle in. I don’t care if Viktor warned Mishka to stay away from me. I want to have a say in my own life. I have the right to choose whom I want to be with. And that’s the tall, brooding, tattooed man who currently has his arms wrapped around me.

Being with him feels so good, so right, and even though we’re stranded in the wilderness, I’ve never felt so safe and warm. My eyes sink closed as I let my exhaustion consume me, and in moments, I’m lost in a world of dreams.

MISHKA

It was a terrible mistake, sleeping with Alina. Not only will it hurt her when she finds out who I really am and why I’m here, but if she tells anyone about us, I will likely end up dead. Definitely not the best way to achieve my revenge.

But as I hold her in my arms and watch her sleeping soundly, I can’t help but admire her perfection. My chest swells as I keep her close, relishing the warmth that passes between us as she nuzzles my chest in her sleep.

My feelings for her are getting out of control. And fast.

I like Alina. A lot.

And now, I have no clue what I’m going to do about it.

I thought I had everything under control. Then she walked into my life and blew apart all my carefully laid plans. I don’t know what to do about it.

Sighing heavily, I rest my head against the cave wall and watch the flames slowly die down. As if of their own accord, my fingers stroke Alina’s wavy golden hair, savoring the silky softness. She doesn’t shiver now, and it brings me immense relief to know that she’s going to be okay. I’ll get her home safely.

My eyelids grow heavy, my muscles stiff as I maintain my watch. But I refuse to wake Alina before it’s absolutely necessary. I tell myself it’s because she needs her rest, but I can’t deny that I want to soak up every second I can with her because this might be the last. We can’t bring our connection into the real world, and before too long, she’s going to hate me anyway.

So, instead, I accept the brief moment of pleasure for the unforgettable night it is.

The sun starts to creep onto the horizon, casting an orangish glow across the treetops. It brings a peaceful quiet to the nature around us. When the light is strong enough that I can make out the landscape between the trees, I look down at Alina once more. I would like to let her sleep longer, but we need to get back on the road—literally—if we’re going to have luck hitchhiking back into town.

“Rise and shine, radnaja,” I murmur, giving her a gentle squeeze.
