“Are you dead? Where the hell have you been? I’ve been worried sick!” she scolds me by way of greeting.
“I’m so sorry, Katie. I fell asleep, but I’m fine. We’re fine.”
“Yeah, well, your bodyguard’s getting grumpy, asking how much longer we’re going to be, and I’ve already had to lie to him that you couldn’t come to the door because you were in the bathroom. Get your butt back here before I lose it,” she commands.
“We’ll be back as soon as we can,” I assure her, giving Mishka a panicked look. I hang up quickly, scrambling off the cold tiles of the bathroom floor. “We have to go,” I insist.
“Are you sure? You were just throwing up two seconds ago,” Mishka says.
“Do you have anything I could use as a sick bucket? I don’t want Katie to get in any trouble.” Not that I think I’ll need it. I have nothing left to throw up, and my stomach feels perfectly fine once again.
Looking rather reluctant to transport me in my condition, Mishka turns and picks up his empty bathroom trash. “You’re sure you don’t want to wait? See if you can hold down some crackers or something?”
“I’m good,” I promise.
Using the glass of water he brought me, I quickly wash my mouth and down the rest. Then I take the trash can from his hands and head back into the main room to get dressed.

ALINA
We make it safely across town, and I leave Mishka at the bottom of her fire escape with a chaste kiss and a rushed goodbye. He watches me climb the whole way up, and I blow him one last kiss before lifting her window and slipping inside.
“What the hell is wrong with you!” Katie scolds as soon as I step inside. “You scared the hell out of me, not answering your phone. You’ve been gone for, like, four hours, and you promised you’d text if anything changed.”
Boris chuffs as he sits by her heels, taking her side as he looks at me with silent accusation, his eyes condemning me for abandoning him.
“I know. I’m so sorry. We just… he took me back to his place, and we sort of accidentally fell asleep. I should have been more careful. I feel awful,” I assure her, grasping her hands as I plead with my eyes for her to forgive me.
“You’re just lucky I love you,” she grumbles. “And your dog is so damn cute.”
“I know,” I say, hugging her in gratitude as she lets it go.
“What were you doing falling asleep at his apartment, anyhow?” she asks, her voice more even now.
Heat rises in my cheeks as I relive the steamy sex that left me in such a cozy, sleepy state, the hypnotic sound of his heart beneath my ear.
“Ooh,” Katie says, her eyes dancing as she reads the answer on my face. “My girl got laid properly tonight!” she crows.
“Shh!” I insist, my eyes flicking toward the door into the hallway.
I don’t know how soundproof it might be, but the last thing I want my new bodyguard to overhear is that I had sex while I was supposed to be studying.
“Oops,” Katie says, cringing as she covers her mouth with her fingers. Then she pulls me onto the couch as her face lights with excitement once again. “But how was it? I mean, I know you guys have done it before, but I feel like I’m owed a few juicy details after you nearly gave me a heart attack tonight.”
Chuckling, I shake my head, and my blush intensifies. “Well, let’s just say it only gets hotter when we’re not trying to have a quickie in the back of his car before we get caught. But, Katie, I’m kind of freaking out…” I admit, my face falling as I think about the more pressing matter at hand.
“About what?” Katie scoots closer, taking my hands supportively.
“I think I might be pregnant,” I whisper, scarcely daring to say the words aloud.
“Shit,” she gasps, her eyebrows pressing together in concern. “What makes you think that?”
“Well, I’m late… and tonight, I started throwing up.”
Katie waves it off casually, blowing a raspberry. “It’s probably just because I fed you cheap popcorn,” she assures me. “But just for your peace of mind, maybe you should do a test.”
I nod, worrying my lip. “You don’t happen to have one lying around that I could take here, do you?”
