“Avoid Tobias if he’s smart. But Blaze is like a fire. Unpredictable at best, explosive at worst. Let’s hope everything goes smoothly so we don’t have to worry about the latter.” I take her hand and kiss her knuckles.

I should have known to keep my thoughts to myself because as soon as we got to the hospital, it was clear something was very much wrong. Chaos is living up to his name while Mayhem stands next to the man he’s cloned after trying desperately to hold him back.

“SIR! You can not come back to the surgery room. I don’t care if you were God himself. You must stay out here!” A nurse is squared up with that brute of a man, showing not an ounce of fear.

“She’s my baby,” Chaos deflates, going to his knees.

“We will take the best care of her. Now, please do not make me call security.” Mayhem nods at her and lifts his father off the floor.

“He won’t be a problem. Right Grandpa?” Mayhem looks at his distressed father.

“Yeah,” They walk over to a set of chairs and sit down.

We all hang around and wait to hear the words in the waiting room of the maternity ward. I tap my fingers on my thigh as I watch Chaos and Blaze slowly lose their shit in separate corners of the room for completely different reasons.

“Something isn’t right,” Charlie says standing to go talk with the receptionist for the third time.

An alarm followed by a recording sounds.

ATTENTION PLEASE. CODE PINK. I REPEAT CODE PINK.

The large doors close and lock around us, sealing us into the waiting room.

“CANNIBAL!” Lacey calls over to the man who is already pulling a laptop out of his bag.

“What’s going on?” I ask her as she takes it from him and starts typing in the machine frantically.

“Code pink is code for infant abduction.” The metal doors leading to the back swing open, and the nurse who was arguing with Tobias stumbles through, holding a bleeding wound from her stomach.

“I’m sorry. She took them.” She stumbles and falls to the floor in front of him.

Shock hits the floor, checking the nurse over as Doc disappears down the way she just came.

Charlie screams, and Tobias roars out god knows what as he charges through the metal doors with Blaze on his heels.

“Oh fuck,” I go to follow, but Lacey grabs my wrist, stopping me.

“I need you. Don’t leave. Abel! I have a partial tag.” She calls over to him.

“I got a surveillance photo. No,” He looks up to Lacey with sad eyes.

“WHAT!” She screams at him.

“It’s Makayla.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

MAKAYLA

“Shhh, it’s okay.” I bounce the babies, who are both crying, in my arms while Sasha drives the ambulance we stole.

“This is crazy, Kay!” She screams over the sound of the sirens as she runs red lights, driving us to where we hide our car.

I’ve never been a big drug person, but the new one we’ve been taking makes everything feel incredible. The colors around you are more vibrant. The sounds are crisp. The sound of these babies in my arms is the sweetest I’ve ever heard.

“Mama’s got you. I won’t let anyone take you away.” I kiss their foreheads.

“We’re here!” The ambulance lurks forward and stops.
