When I make my way out to my car and on my drive home, the whole ride home all I hear, all I can think about is that please.

Chapter 8

Tyler

Iglance down at my phone, at the last text Tori sent me.

I’m good, thanks

It’s been a week since the engagement party, and I haven’t seen Tori. We’ve texted once since then, which is weird as fuck. We usually text each other a dozen times a day, every day.

Normally we’re joking or teasing or sending funny memes or asking the other to meet up for a drink or to grab food.

But the day after the engagement party, I texted to her to check on her

And that was her response.

Me: Hey, are you okay? Is there anything I can do for you?

Tori: I’m good, thanks

As I finish my last set of deadlifts at the gym, I’m drenched in sweat. I grunt as I slowly lift the barbell from the ground. When I drop it onto the floor, I wheeze out a breath. I rest my hands on my legs as I hunch over and catch my breath.

I hate this. I hate that I made some stupid joke about her sex list and made her uncomfortable.

I hate that things are weird between us now because of it.

And I hate that I have no idea how to fix things between us.

I think back to that look on her face when I made that joke, how sick she looked. My stomach churns.

I press my eyes shut, wishing I could take back what I said.

I honestly didn’t think it would be a big deal when I joked that I could help Tori with her sex list. I wasn’t actually expecting her to take me up on it. I figured she’d laugh and shove my shoulder or say something funny in return, like she normally does. But that stricken look on her face, how she looked freaked out and embarrassed all at once, made me want to puke.

Just knowing that I made her feel that way…

I press my eyes shut as I ride that wave of shame and regret yet again.

I’d tell her sorry a million more times if it meant that she’d feel better. But she clearly doesn’t want to hear from me, judging by that short reply she sent me.

Gage walks up to me. “That’s the most you’ve deadlifted in a while. Nice,” he says before setting up to do his own sets.

I’m still breathing hard as I nod my head in thanks.

He starts in on his reps as I down some water and wonder how the hell I’m going to fix things with Tori.

“You okay?” Gage asks as he catches his breath between sets. “You’ve been kind of quiet lately.”

“I’m fine,” I grunt.

Gage raises an eyebrow at me. “You sure?”

Clearly, my younger brother knows me well enough to know that I’m lying. I’d normally be joking or giving him a hard time during our workout sessions together at the gym. But I’ve been quiet this entire time.

“Things with you and Tori okay?” he says after finishing his next set of deadlifts.

I huff out a breath. “Uh…”
