Those gold-brown eyes peer down at me, clearly surprised to see me.

She blinks at me. “Hey.”

“Hey. Sorry, I, um, didn’t want to bother you.”

“What’s that?” she points at the bag.

I stand up, bag in hand. I let out an embarrassed laugh. “I made some BLTs for you. Your favorite. Just wanted to make sure you had enough to eat.”

The most beautiful smile appears on her face. And then she steps into my space, slips her arms around my waist, and hugs me.

“Thank you,” she says softly into my chest.

All the muscles in my body relax at the feel of her embrace. I wrap my free hand around her and hug her back.

We stand there for a few seconds. I savor this moment. How good it feels to have her in my arms. How I’ve missed hugging her this whole week.

I breathe in the light vanilla scent of her perfume.

“I missed you,” she murmurs against me.

I smile. “I missed you too.”

She pulls away and takes the bag from my hand.

“My plan was to text you after dropping them off,” I say. “I didn’t mean to bother you. I’m sorry.”

She smiles up at me, eyes bright, like she couldn’t be happier to see me. It makes my heart beat faster.

“I could hear your footsteps down the hall,” she says before chuckling.

I shrug and smile. “I tried to be quiet.”

She laughs. “It’s okay. I’m happy you’re here.” She peers into the bag and inhales. She closes her eyes. “Oh wow, that smells amazing. Your timing is perfect, I’m starving but didn’t feel like cooking.”

She takes me by the hand and leads me into her place. I shut the door behind me and follow her into her kitchen.

As she unpacks the sandwiches, her eyes go wide.

She looks at me. “You made me five sandwiches?”

“I wanted you to have enough for leftovers.”

She blows me a kiss and I laugh.

She unwraps one sandwich and takes a giant bite. I walk to her cabinet, grab a glass, fill it with water, and set it down on the counter next to her.

“Thanks,” she says with her mouth full.

She offers me some, but I tell her no thanks, I’m not hungry.

When she finishes chewing, she stops to wipe her mouth. She turns to me, the look in her eyes shy and embarrassed.

“So, um, about what happened last week. I’m sorry I reacted that way, I just…”

She fiddles with the crust of her sandwich, clearly nervous. I’m quiet as she works out what she wants to say.

“I know you’re probably wondering why I was so weird,” she says after a moment. “Especially since we joke around a lot. I know we’ve talked and joked about sex too, so it must be confusing to you why, um…why I was so…”
