“What the—”

“I said I’d stop you from going too far. This is it.”

I glared at him, growling, for several moments.

But he just stood there calmly as he holstered his gun, waiting.

I managed to suck in a breath and calm myself.

He nodded, then eyed Lance, just as Olivia rushed up to him. “You should’ve done it, but you were clearly on a killing high after taking out Isobel.”

“Oh my God,” Olivia rasped as she wrapped her arms around Lance and they stared at Isobel’s fallen form. “It’s really done. She’s gone.”

“Yeah,” Lance breathed, in some real shock over it.

He turned with Olivia in his arms and looked out at the scene, then fixed his gaze on me.

“It’s over. All this darkness is done with.”

“Yeah,” I murmured, trying to reconcile it all.

“All right,” he said, shoving a hand through his hair. “You two need to get out of here. Liv and I will stay behind to talk with the feds and sort everything out. My cleanup team will be here in seconds to ensure none of these kills lead back to us. They’ll work with yours.”

“That’s gonna mean you’ll be stepping out of the shadows,” Aaron warned him.

Lance nodded. “It’s about time, don’t you think?” He looked at me. “About time we all stepped from the dark and back into the light.”

I smiled.

It certainly was.

All these years of existing in that state just trying to survive the Infidels, and now that weight had been lifted off.

It was a lot to process.

I couldn’t fucking believe it.

We’d done it.

The enemy had fallen.

We’d won.

And we were fucking well free.

No more surviving.

It was time to actually live.

One Month Later

I grinned as I watched Aurora wince and mentally prepare herself for a few moments.

I waited, letting her do what she needed to do, as the rest of the class filtered out all around us, a cacophony of noise erupting of voices, footsteps, the clack of heels, the scraping of those awkward folding tables attached to the auditorium-type seating.
