“I bet the whole becoming a monster to defeat the monsters thing didn’t go over too well with your missionary employers.”

“It didn’t, hence me now being a free agent.”

“Once we bring Asher back, what are your plans?”

“You don’t mean my career plans, I assume.”

“You know I don’t.”

“You want me gone, I get it.” He shifted his weight. “The thing is, Ash may very well need me in the aftermath of what he endures in that prison.”

“I’m here. I’ve got him.”

He scrutinized me for a moment.

“This isn’t out of petty jealousy after all. Forcing this conversation, your overall negative reaction to me. You’re worried I’m a point of vulnerability for him.”

“Are you?”

He put his coffee mug down and sat back. “No. If anything, it was actually the other way around. It is the other way around.”

“What?”

“I’m risking a great deal by being here right now, by involving myself in this. Yet, I dropped everything on a dime to find him, to come here with you and help. That’s how much power, how much of a hold, he has over me.”

“You love him?”

“Let’s just say that his demons play well with mine. Extremely well.”

“So, it’s obsession?”

He smirked. “I prefer the term kinship.”

Before I could speak more to it, my phone buzzed.

I pulled it out quickly and swiped it open to see a text I’d been waiting on.

Jesus, three days had gone by since Asher had been stuck in that hellhole. The minutes had felt like hours, the days like weeks, knowing what he was likely being subjected to in that torture chamber. It had seemed like time was just going to continue slipping away until we’d made a breakthrough.

And now, here it was.

Unknown Number: On my way.

Jonah: You’ll need the address.

Unknown Number: You’re obviously at the safehouse.

Of course Asher had told him about that.

Jonah: Confirmed. What’s your ETA?

Unknown Number: Need to get some gear together. Be there after sundown tomorrow.

Jonah: Got it. Thanks.

Unknown Number: Get his location ASAP. Look for ties to Revenant. His father will consider things beginning with that fucker. He won’t be able to resist the symbolism.

Jonah: The place Revenant was tortured?
