I couldn’t have that.

I couldn’t allow her to become a victim to that sort of depraved obsession.

I’d had to delete the images that had followed of the three of them defiling my daughter at the poolside. I was still trying to scrub them from my memory entirely.

I wouldn’t allow it.

I wouldn’t.

And the longer it had been allowed to continue, the four of them remaining together, the stronger the connection would grow, the deeper their obsession would run. The more dangerous it would prove to be.

“Absolutely not,” I muttered under my breath.

I glared down at the texts that had come in over the last few days.

Relentless texts.

All from Asher’s number.

But he wasn’t the one writing and sending them.

I knew it for a fact, because I’d seen him taken by Carson and his henchmen that night.

The first one had been as forthright as his messages were, though, the true culprit likely trying to play themselves off as Asher Monroe.

Asher: Need intel on Aurora. ASAP.

When I hadn’t responded, a half hour later, another message had hit my inbox. Impatience at its finest. Definitely not Asher.

Asher: Consider this your debt to me. What do you know of Aurora?

They’d gone on and on like that, the intensity growing with each one.

Asher: Did your dirty work, dollhouse network is down. Least you could do is tell me what you know, Lance.

Asher: Where’s that fucking code of honor now, huh?

The demands had reached fever pitch and when I still hadn’t responded, the sender had changed tactics.

Bargaining had begun.

Asher: I get it, you think we’re bad for her. She needs to make that choice, not you.

The bargaining had been strategic and careful at first, before emotion had obviously gotten the best of the sender, and they’d shown their desperation with the next string of messages.

Asher: Find me proof of life and that’s it. The boys and I will walk.

Asher: Don’t do this. Let me know she’s alive.

Asher: Please confirm either way.

Giving them anything would mean it wouldn’t be over.

They’d pursue.

No amount of assurances would convince me otherwise.

Asher and his boys didn’t give up, they didn’t back down.
