“You see, little lamb, the type of training you’ve had is geared to taking down an opponent as quickly and as efficiently as possible while ensuring you sustain very little damage. The world you’re entering now, the people you could come up against, want your pain and blood. They engage you in a fight, and it’s not just about defeating an opponent and winning said battle, it’s about making you suffer as much as possible. There’s no honor in it, no rules of engagement. It’s brutality filled with underhanded moves.”

“Hmm,” my dad uttered. “It’s shocking.”

“I know, but—”

“Not the stabbing itself.”

“What?”

“The fact that Asher was enamored with you even that early on. He could’ve taken the intel you provided him and then locked you down. But he didn’t. He worked with you to ensure you were prepared to face the enemy. He took a risk of pushing you away, so that you’d be safe, so that you’d be ready.” He stepped back, thinking on it. “It’s not obsession either, after all. At least not dangerous obsession, like his father exhibits with anyone he takes a carnal interest in. They empower you, work with you. They go against their natural instincts to make you comfortable, happy.”

Oh my God. He was seeing it.

“They do, Dad.”

But then my heart sank as he looked at me and said, “Their world is still incredibly dangerous.”

“I’m not afraid.”

“But I am. For you, angel.”

“Then help to make it better.”

“That’s not—”

“You took the Infidels’ greatest opponent off the board. Put him back on, Dad.”

“I can’t just—”

“He’s suffering! He’s suffering so much and you’re partly responsible for that.”

“I did what I had to do.”

“You can’t really believe that. You crossed a line. If you can’t recognize that, then I really did lose you to Carson Monroe all those years ago.”

“Lan,” Olivia urged, laying a hand on his shoulder.

He winced and took a moment, then asked me, “What would you have me do, angel?”

“Simple. I want you to save him.”

“It’s far from simple to accomplish a search and rescue like that.”

“Not for you.”

“Aurora—”

“You’re Revenant, Dad.”

He stared at me for a few moments.

Intensity crackled.

And then he finally said, “Fine. I’ll take care of it.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes,” he gritted out. “I’ll set that little fucker free.”
